October 15, 200619 yr Hello all, I'm putting new timing belts, water pump and oil pump on my '94 Loyale. While degreasing the bare front of the engine, a ball bearing fell out from somewhere. I've had a look in my Haynes manual but do not see it. Does anyone know if this goes behind the oil pump, like some sort of check ball? Or maybe somewhere else? Or maybe it was there from days of old, buried in layers of gunk. Thanks in advance! Dave
October 15, 200619 yr Author and not the one that goes on the oil pump where the filter attaches, that one is still there. Thanks.
October 15, 200619 yr wanna say hey from TN cuz there's not many soob nuts down here in the southeast... and I have no idea where that could have fallen from. I've had an ea82 apart before... but I am not familiar with any small ball bearings towards the front of the eingine. don't think there's any behind the oil pump. could very well have been buried in the gunk... and could have been from something important cuz i don't know!!! lol
October 15, 200619 yr Check the belt tensoiners. Don't know if they use ball or roller bearings but what the heck.
October 16, 200619 yr youre talking about a steel ball about 3/8-1/2 inch in diameter?? the belt tensioners use ball bearings, but nothing THAT big.. it was probably an odd chunk of road debris/old mechanic leftover???? but I cant imagine what it might be otherwise. if you see lots of people viewing this thread, and no answers, that what i would take it to be (especially since i have now gone and put my nose out. If I'm wrong, someone is BOUND to chime in, right?)
October 16, 200619 yr Author Daeron, Actually, it's 1/4 inch diameter. Looks just like the one on the oil pump filter face (which is still there). I started all this because all of a sudden, the car started making noise like valves out of adjustment, but I could isolate the source. Manual said oil pump can cause this type noise. Maybe there are (were) 2 such metal balls in the oil pump?? and that is the problem. Dave
October 16, 200619 yr the noise you're hearing are probably the HLA, (hydraulic lash adjusters) and they can make noise if they're dirty of when the oil pump sucks in air through the gasket, a very common and easy to fix problem. please use the search "TOD" of "tick of death" that should yield you a couple of topics, and I even believe there was a recent one...
October 16, 200619 yr Author Thanks for the reply, joostvdw. I did a search as you suggested and don't think that's the problem. The threads indicated TOD was a 'come and go' noise, whereas mine, since it started has not ceased. Dave
October 17, 200619 yr looking at the oil pump housing... There's a bolt on the lower right going into the housing at an angle. I think there might be a spring/BB behind that. If that bolt came out, you'd have the BB, and probably a lot of noise also (I could be completely wrong also)
October 25, 200619 yr Thought of this post when I was tearing the engine apart. The ball bearing could be this in photo (pressure relief?).
