Power locks problem 90 Legacy

Featured Replies

The drivers door on the Legacy is giving me problems. When the key is put in the door it will lock the doors but not unlock them. It is a new key from a dealer. Possibly that the mechanism inside the door needs lubed? If so I'll try to remove the inner door panel this weekend and silicone everything. I'm looking for a starting point at the moment......

does the key unlock the driver door? but not the other 3? or none? if the key opens the driver door, it's an electrical / connector / wiring problem, not the key. do all the locks work properly when you activate them from the inside at driver door lock?

Does the key just spin?

If so this is a know early legacy think, the tumbler breaks on early models.

You need to get the tumbler replaced.

The key locks the door but will not turn in the direction to unlock. At times the key will turn to unlock , but it feels like it is very tight or stiff to turn. All the doors lock with this key and the hatch unlocks locks with the key. Maybe a bent pice of linkage in the drivers door?

it sounds like it's internal with the key way, maybe the tumblers like said above. i don't know if they are swappable , but if they are, just move this lock to the passenger side. then it will unlock but not lock. it will get much less use over there. but as long as you have it out you may as well ask a lock smith.

the locks/key way are held in by a bolt and a spring clip. pretty easy to take apart, a lot harder to put the bolt back in. i've been runnig with just the spring clip for several years. it works great until some one trys to punch your door lock. but i'd guess you can swap.i didn't see anything about the lock when i had mine out that would make it left or right handed. it looked symetrical with the bolt on top.

Excellent suggestion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Weather is supposed to be really bad here tommorow. Sounds like a good day to work on the Subby in the garage.

They are not swappable, and it is only held in by a spring clip, but you need to remove the two nuts that hold the assembly in place.

Well it was a nice thought. Going out to the garage soon tostart tearing into the problem. I'm still hoping just a lube job willtake care of it.

I got the door panel off and found all the parts dry of lube. Got it all greased up and it worked perfectly. Horrah!!!! Until the tumblers in the cylinder let loose. I guess better here in the garage than somewhere else. The new cylinder is on order, the locksmith has been called and the old cylinder is out of the door.

The next question is, is it easier to put the new cylinder back in with the handle off of the car? It looks like 2 nuts and a clip will get it off of the car. I can't get my hand in there to put that spring clip back in on the cylinder. Maybe I'm doing it wrong????

Thanks for all the help, Mark

i don't recommend removing the door handle. i suspect it be just as hard to reinstall it as it is to instal the lock with the handle in the door. you may have bettrer luck than i did, but the spring clip works all by it self.

maybe the next time i have to do it i'll see about drilling a 1/2" hole on the inside of the door that lines up with the bolt location for the lock set. in other words drill an access hole. maybe that would help. they must install the door handle / lock before the window.
