99 5MT weirdness

Featured Replies

Hi all.....

Ive put nearly 2k on my recent aquisition...a 99 Legacy 30th anniversary edition...and during most of my 2nd -> 3rd shifts i feel the gear box catch with the clutch all the way in...something i havent ever experienced before...is this the syncros? Is my 5MT on the way out? Has anyone else out there had problems like this before?

Thanks!!!

yea 5mts are very unique. all are different. do a search on gear oil. check nasioc.com and search for uncle scooty's cocktail (look for the 400pg thread)

Can you explain it a little bit better?

I have used Redline shockproof Ultra-light in both MY02 and MY04 5 speeds. It has virtually eliminated the periodic "crunch" you get form Subaru's newer gear synchros.

It is expensive, and an ugly mustard yellow color. But barring any other transmission problems, should last the lifetime of your vehicle.

Scotty's Coctail that is talked about in Nasioc, is a hit or miss deal. Some guys there like it, others still have the synchro crunch. Also the mix is tough to shift when it's cold, like the standard dino gearoil.

I have found positive results with Castrol Syntorq and more recently Valvoline Synpower.

Synpower cured a 2nd-3rd crunch in my gearbox, and has kept it away for the full 50,000km drain interval. Needless to say, Synpower went in again.
