This time, the spline that the outer cv joint is on pulled out of the center star thingy. I thought the outer cv was pressed onto the halfshaft. I just put this axel in last monday, so having it come apart so fast is frustrating How the heck did it come apart like this without the inner CV overextending first? It's my guess that it was and whoever rebuilt it didnt put the little circlip back on that goes on the end of the shaft that holds it in the joint. Thats all I can think of without any kind of pictures or better description, even for a reman'd axle I dont see any reason for it to fail so fast even if you drive your car like I drive mine. The car had 2 different axels, one with smaller outer cup, and one with a bigger one. I chose to use the bigger one. It looked fine when it went in, but... I thought that the outer joint was kinda permanently installed on the halfshaft. I also don't get where the force to pull it out came from. It's not permanent, it's just really damn hard to get apart. They use an inner snap ring that fits into a groove on the inside of the inner race. You sure it wasn't an EA81 axle? They are too short and will pull apart from one end or the other if you try to put them on an EA82. GD Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
scrap487 Posted November 20, 2006 Share Posted November 20, 2006 It could also have already been damaged when you got it but just took a bit of runnin around to work it loose. Did you grease either of the joints up when you got it? the DOJ could have been dry and somewhat seized up putting a little bit of extra strain on the CV? That is kinda weird. No - the axle will just flop around and you will lose power. Unless you think a 1/2" ball bearing rolling down the freeway is much of a danger..... personally I've seen worse. Just by driving on the freeway at any speed, you're a danger to yourself and those around you. Doesn't matter if parts are breaking or not.
