Mismatching heads

Featured Replies

Will having roller rocker's on one side and the regular rockers on the other have any ill effects on my EJ22? I don't feel like swapping the other head, I could swap over the cam and regular rockers to the roller head. I'm just wondering if there will be any issues in having the mismatched valvetrain.

er um, yes. There may be different cam profiles, lifts etc. This is just asking for trouble. Heads should match. It may be that there is no effect, and you would be the first to try this, but unless you like pulling your engine apart, heads should match. You may never have a smooth idling car. Also there will be an odd amount of stress on the timing belt.

How?

The heads look about the same cyl side and outside, it's just under the valvecover it's different. I assume it has a different cam to go with the contact point of the roller vs. the point of the slider. I don't want to take the other head off... it's another 40 bucks for another head gasket.

For the price, I would let it be. On side is hydraulic, the other side solid. If it idles smoothly and is smooth under power, I would let sleeping dogs lie. The valve timing on one side will be different than the other, that would lead to uneven idle or power. But if you are not experiencing that, let us know in a year, how the experiment is proceeding.

Both sides would be hydraulic, just one would have rollers and one wouldn't. Here's a pic of the roller head:

It works fine. Plenty of power, smooth idle. There was some lifter tap on the head I swapped, but it went away after I drove it a bit. Nice to have it back running.

I'd go with it and not worry about it.
