Front diff end play adjustment 96 imp

Featured Replies

Ok I did a search and could not find what I wanted..

I put a 96 impreza transmission into my 88 Rx.. and today when I went to hook up the front axles, I touched the stub and pushed it in towards the tranny... the things got a good inch or so of play... looks like the caps have been messed with and I'm unsure how to fix it the right way. Also, did this tranny have the adjustment "lockers" on it (the piece of metal bolted to the side of the adjustment that holds it, like an EA tranny)

This was kinda a mystery tranny(got it from a guy of CL), checked the front and turned it, turns smooth no issue there, but I didnt check the sides... I haven't played much with new stuff, so give me the best advice:grin:

Thanks all!

those diff end caps are supposed to be set precisely from what i've heard john in KY and others that know what they're talking about say. MDJC just posted on the older generation forum about replacing the seals inside of those caps, so you might want to check his thread out. he's the only guy i've heard of that's actually removed them before to replace his seals. gotta roll, but i've seen a few others talk about this too, but it's been awhile.

Maybe the retaining C-clip on the shaft is simply worn or missing? The screw-in side caps are used for setting the backlash in the differential. You can't gain/lose a whole inch by adjusting them, anyway.
