Best hitch for a 1990 Legacy?

Featured Replies

All,

I need to get a CLass 2 hitch for my legacy to tow my jet skis (about 1600 lbs).

U-haul sells one for $140.00 Is this a good price? (I don't care/want installation- I can do that myself).

1600lb is a lot of weight to be towing - especially if you have AWD.

Thanks for not answering my question!
My dad paid $150 (I think) for a drawtite one several years ago. So, assuming that the hitch is in good condition, that's a decent price.

I got double the fun off a hitch I bought from the j/y $5.00. A class 3 receiver off a 1976 Ford P/U. Had it cut down to fit the frame of my 1971 Comet 50.00,

they even drilled and bolted it up for me. When I sold the Comet I pulled the hitch, went back to the same shop and they cut and installed the same hitch on my 93 Legacy for another 50.00. I have 105.00 invested in a hitch, currently uninstalled that I used to pull 2 jet skis and the 2 place trailer. Never worried about weight as I also used the car to pull my 16' Bayliner with 50 HP outboard. The car wasn't quick and struggled on any kind of hill, but I did manage 180,000 miles on the engine before it puked. The car had no problem with pulling the weight, just have to load it right so you don't have so much tongue weight, never a problem with the jet skis.

you know what 1600 lb's doesn't sound like much, i have heard of people towing over 3000lb's and the payload in the trunk is almost 800lb's so can nto see why the car would struggle towing 1600lb's. Just some suggestions, go to subaru's and get a subaru made hitch, not universal's(not a universal kind of guy :-p) and get use synthetic oil in the tranny, and differentials. Also, its a good investment to get a tranny oil cooler. Good luck.

Any universal hitch will work and you don't need to waste money on synthetic oil.

why not? am i not allowed to suggest sythetic oil? Is it not known to increase transmission life?

Sounds like a common consensus is to get a tranny cooler, so I will look into that. Any specific recommendations there as to what model?

FWIW, I towed these jet skis on my 1985 and 1987 EA82's, and they both did fine, although slower than piss. Hell, last summer I towed them over Independence Pass into Aspen. So, going to a car with 50 more horsepower and much better breaks doesn't concern me with payload. Doesn't seem to concern subaru that much, as the owners manual says I can tow this too.

It's known to increase leaks and emptiness of your wallet. It's not a good idea just to randomly swap to synthetic oil after your car has run thousands and thousands of miles on Dino.
