motor rebuild question

Featured Replies

i have a 1989 subaru rx coupe, 1.8 turbo, 5spd; and was looking to buy a set of gaskets and timing belt kit on ebay. wanted to know if a the gaskets and belt kit from a (1985-1994) Subaru Loyal 2wd / 4 wd 1.8 SOHC EA82 or (1985-1990) Subaru XT 1.8 SOHC EA82 would fit. thank you

best bet is to use the permatorque Fel-pro heads, otherwise the FSM suggest the headbolts need to be re-torqued.

but physically those kits should have just about everything you need.

Yes absolutly. use the Fel pro permatorques. OEM head gaskets are ************. If u cant get new head bolts than u should clean out the threads in the block for an accurate torque. Also if u get new bolts clean the threads. Any head gasket for an EA82, there all the same. even the turbos. make sure the heads are torqued evenly. and I would suggest to run a 2 core rad. EA82's are way under cooled especially the turbos. #1 cause for them blowing. If u have any more qustions dont hesitate to ask.

this is my first subaru. i was a nissan man so i dont realy know whats good for these cars. also im looking to do some minor upgrades. let me know if theyre good ideas and/or if you have any you can recommend. straight pipe the exhaust after the cat, lower temp thermostat, make custom intercooler set up... thank you

Yes, the valve cover gaskets and the rest should be the same. Exhust, the cats on these cars are rediculus. u can streight pipe after the cat but it wont make a difference in sound. what I did with my RX is cut out the cat and the rest. I ran 2 1/2 pipe streight off the turbo into a cherry bomb mounted half way back. then I cut open the cherry bomb and removed the packing, so its just like a resinator, welded it back togather and put it in. it sounds mean. Then I removed the air box and mounted a cone filter. Now when u rev it up and snap the throttle u here a blow off sound. pretty cool. The sound is the air trying to back spool the turbo. U could also run an accell coil and better wires and non resistor spark plugs. NGK BP6ES not BPR6ES thats the resistor plug hince the R. ny thing els just let us know, and welcome to Subarus.

youll find a lot of similarities between nissans and subarus. so far your plans sound good. if you look in the retrofitting forum, you can find injector upgrades if you plan on turning up the boost.
