does anyone make a kit for the gl that plugs into the existing harness to hook up trailer lights, or do i just need to splice everything in? i just got ahold of a nifty new hitch and need to wire up the 4 pin.

I doubt you'll find a plug and play kit for an older subaru. Splicing a four wire set up would be easy anyway. Just heat shrink the connections to keep them from getting nasty.

My first call would be a U Haul place.

 

Please remember, as with most imports,

your brake and turn signals are separate.

 

Trailers are not.

 

The converter boxes are readily available.

(NAPA, ect. -- Wally World even..)

 

Even with the use of one

the "stop lamp out" check light will

still illuminate

(easy way for you to tell your trailer brake lights

are working.)

 

As Frank says wiring is not hard.

Please do not use "Scotch locks"

(The fold over the wire connectors).

 

My method is to strip about .75" of insulation

off a section of the wire you are attaching to.

 

Separate the stands, feed the new wire through

the stands and twist it around the stripped section.

Notice the factory wire is uncut and corrosion

will not affect the lighting of the lamp on the car.

 

Solder is prefered but good electrical tape

(Scotch Super 33 for instance) is essential.

Wiring is easy. Just a tip, the tailamp assemblies have a connector for all wires at the bottom. If you splice in below the connector(body side) then if you bust tailight lense or something, you can replace it without having to undo your trailer wiring.

Also, the strip, wrap and solder method will work great. That said I have used the simple "clip on" tap splice connectors with no problems. In fact if you had it professionally wired by U-Haul or such they would use them. So long as you get the correct ones for the gauge of wire your using, and wrap it tight with electrical tape for corrosion protection.
