I gotta tell somebody!

Hey all-

I probably am just being dumb, but I wanted to tell you about the trade I just made. I liked it. I saw an 85 wagon for sale the other day. I've been looking for a truck to pull my boat as I am tired of borrowing and last time I rented a truck- F*** that! So I found a truck that and the guy wanted to trade for something smaller (better MPG) I asked about and he accepted the soob wagon + $200 cash. So I went and bought this wagon for $250 and drove it to kenosha from chicago. I traded the guy and drove home in the oversized beast! Then of course this morning it wont start, but hey! Thats why I didn't want to trade my loyale for the truck in the first place. I need a soob! Now I have both. And the guy sold his car. And the other guy traded his truck for a smaller car. EVERYBODY WINS!!! This truck, a 1978 Ford F-250 4X4 with a 4 speed and a flatbed. I think it is lifted a little in a homemade way. I havn't really looked at it yet. What a pig! :headbang::grin::slobber::rolleyes:   :-p :-\;):burnout:

PS- I am going to tell the guy to come here for advice. I didn't actually see him, his asst. did the deal. He will need CVs in a couple thousand miles or so. Just starting to click in tight parking lot turns. 83,000 miles

Does anybody know any old ford websites or forums like this one?

What color was that '85? I am in Kenosha, and I know of maybe 4 or five old soob's in this town other than mine. There are 2 here that used to be mine. I brought them out from Oregon with no rust. Anyway I just am curious to be on the lookout for it. If the guy calls you and needs mechanic advice or work done, tell him bout me. I have a garage here in Kenosha, FSM's for all years of ea82 GLs(85-89) and tons of spare subie parts. PM me for my Phone and Addy.

Sounds like a nice trade. I was looking for one of those bodystyle trucks a few years back, but in an F150 since I wanted a conventional crossover steering system and coils up front. I got a 72 instead........

I am on FTE as well, actually I am the moderator in the garage and workshop forum. The support there is second to none, tons of people helping and giving advice.

78 F250, it's probably a 460 if it's a big block, small block probably 351 or 400M :dead: but either way, not so hot on gas. (Better than an FE though, I had a 75 F-100 with a 390 that was good for about 8 if I babied it!)

I second http://www.ford-trucks.com, I'm on there, but I can't remember my login lol

I think it's Hondasucks lol..

IIRC, the 460 wasn't put in the 4x4 trucks until 83 or 84. The 351m/400 use a big block bellhousing, and are considerably larger than a small block.

Being a 78, it's either a 300-6, or a 351m/400.

Broncos from the 78-79 model years were only available with the 351m or 400.

I still think it's weird that up into the 80s you could get a 3/4 ton Ford truck with a 300 six!

There's a lot of 1 ton trucks with a 300 six, that engine is insane!!! Everone I've ever talked fords to has said that ending production on the 300 was fords biggest mistake!! Hell, they made it from 68 to 96 I think!!! They only weakness is the lack of breathing ability from the tiny manifolds. Put on a clifford or offenhauser 2 or 4 barrel manifold with a 2100 2 barrel or a small 4 barrel and a set of EFI 300 exhaust maifolds and you almost double the horsepower! Put in a mild cam with that combo and you will!

It's like driving a diesel, your redline is 3000 but the torque is incredible!

I tried posting earlier, but it didn't take-

The 300-6 was available up until 96, in trucks up to F350 dualies. The smaller version, the 240-6 was available in cars up to 71 or 72, and trucks until 75.

I had a very healthy 300-6 in an 84 F250 4x4, it had a 428cfm 2BBL on an Offey intake, fully bowl ported and polished 240 head, that along with flat top pistons put the c/r over 9.5:1, 2" duals, and a rather hot cam. It didn't break mounts, it snapped the three 7/16" grade 8 bolts holding the mounts to the block.

Well, the wife hates the big ford. To big, ugly and old lookin! Women! Anyway, its for sale as a "parts car" on ebay now. We'll see how it goes. Anybody here interested? Look on ebay under parts cars 78 ford f-250 4x4. Should come up. Let me know if any of us is interested.

Uh.... that's what you need to pull a boat. I like the syling of the '73 or even the '66 a little better myself, but '78 still isn't bad.

I don't need a truck that big, but if I ever do, I want to get a early 70's F-series, and put the drivetrain from a newer Isuzu NPR in it -- 4.7 liter 4 cylinder turbo diesel. 190HP at 2600rpm, 380ftlbs torque. Little different than a subaru huh  It gets 15mpg in my company's 16 foot box truck.

Dude! That was the last good looking Ford truck body style, until the first-gen Superdutys. The last girl who said something like that to me is now single, and I still have my trucks.

I've always wondered what could be done to hotrod that 300-6 to drop her into an old fastback mustang and make my own muscle car....

Being the Datsun Z-car fan, i LOVE inline six engines, and when it comes to 'merican cars, i am definitely a ford man... but now I hear those engines cant rev above like 4 grand.. :(

.. what does your wife want you to get to tow your boat with, then? a $30K "pretty" truck????

*daeron does the semi gleeful, semi depressive single man dance*

I will never understand those people with the double X chromosome.. they just dont make no sense..... (forum company, naturally excluded for showing the rationality requisite in subaru ownership)

You can get performance parts up the yinyang for those sixes, even stuff like OHC heads from Australia :-) Linn-Benton Community College used to have a Falcon station wagon with a 300-6 in it that ran a 12.5.... Sounded like a V8 with a dead cylinder lol

but now I hear those engines cant rev above like 4 grand.. :(

Huh? Mine hit 6k on a regular basis, still had power there, I usually shifted it at 5k.

There is a guy over at fordsix.com who has a 300 that turns 8k.

I was in the process of building a 300-6TT that would regularly see 7k, but unfortunetely all the parts have been lost (no thanks to my old landlord).

I guess I must have misinterpreted the full meaning of this:

THANK you for helping avoid the obliteration of the only american car "dream" I really have

One of these days, when I have a billion dollars and all the other cars I can handle (a stable of Zcars and other nissans, a few soobs, a gullwing mercedes, an E-jag, you know.. my dream garage) one of these will be mine.. maybe even one day, in real life the stars will align..

Okay, end threadjack :-p

The truck is a 351 8 cyl w/ a 4 speed. No granny 1st, but low 4wd. And hi 4wd and 2wd high. Hubs are smooth, no problem. Not to high reving on the highway. I was doing 70 and such with no problem. No CRAZY gas useage. Not a soob either :-\ . Its not bad, but who am I to argue :Flame::eek:

Awesome welding truck!

My 82 all stock and tired 300 six, will rev up past 3000, but there's no power there. I can shift that sloppy 4-speed as fast as I can keeping the rpm below 3000 and it accellerates like no other truck I've driven. Except for that freightliner of course....

The 300 is a long stroke, big bore engine, totally different than driving a V8.
