ej22 in place of ej18 questions

Featured Replies

ok yes i know it will fit. yes i know its as simple as using the ej18 intake and parts on the ej22.

but i have read that you will not be getting full power from the ej22 by using the ej18 ECU, intake and sensors.

is that true. i mean really how much power loss are we talking about.

would it just be worth running the ej22 ECU and intake. yes i know i would probable have to repin some of the wires going to the ECU.

but is it even worth it. anyone play with this. i think it was Ratty2Austin that was running an older impreza that he swapped an ej22 into. i read some of his posts and i swore he later went to running the ej22 harness and ECU. but started out by running the ej18 stuff with ej22 injectors

and it is an ej22 out of a 93 legacy 5speed going into a 95 impreza 5speed

what are you doing?are you putting EJ18 heads on EJ22 for more compression?or am I just high from working with the fuel system all day?:dead:

no only slightly high.

i am swapping the whole ej22 into a 95 impreza coupe and was wondering if it would even be worth swapping the ECU from my legacy into the impreza.

i just remember reading something about the full potential of the motor will not be reached by running a ej18 intake and ECU.

I mean true it's not like these things are chocked full of power but a horse power here or there is going to bug me but if it makes it feel like someone has an anchor out the back then it would be worth my time swapping the whole ECU

I ran a shoc ej25 from a 00 impreza in a 96 with a 1.8 ecu for a few years. Only thing i noticed was it would ping sometime and need mid grade gas, probably because the 1.8 didnt use a knock sensor, and the 2.5 had more compression. You might not have the same problem with a 2.2. The 1.8 throttle body is smaller but I dont think you will loose much.

if i remember correctly, the ej18 intake manifold will not bolt up to the ej22 heads.

so, you might need the intake and exhaust manifolds for the ej22.

also, i've seen a couple cases where the new engine will be sluggish and not rev as high. so, rallitek makes a piggy-back for running the ej25 on the ej22 or ej18 wiring + ECU, it will probably work in your application at well.

The difference is barely noticable at all. The intake manifolds are plug and play, although the EJ18 doesn't have a knock sensor. Leave it on the block if you want, or think you'll eventually put an '95 EJ22 ECU in (I happen to have a spare). If you do eventually go with the EJ22 ECU, you will notice it go a little flat as it pulls timing without a knock sensor signal (CEL will be thrown) until you put that pin into the plug and run a wire out to the sensor. Once you do that, it runs like it came that way to begin with.

The EJ22 on the EJ18 ECU is noticably more peppy (than the EJ18). Expect around 25-27mpg and learn to live with the 6k revlimit.....it comes up quicker with the EJ22! :headbang: (but not as quick as with an EJ25):burnout:

The PP6 from Rallitek isn't worth the price (imho).

PM me with any specific questions.
