  1. 2.2 heads on a 2.5 will give you way to much compression, it will ping and knock. And with the small valves will you won't be getting all the power of a real 2.5. If you have a good 2.5 block you can get 2.5 phase 2 heads pretty cheap or buy a core motor with a bad bottom end, then swap the heads and intake.
  2. As long as you get the same style (DOHC) they will be nearly the same and anything different (a/c, power steering, etc) can be swapped off your old motor. Just dont get a jdm legacy twin turbo motor or something like that and it will be an easy change.
  3. Just change intake manifolds and you can keep the wiring on it, they use different idle air controls, swapping manifolds will solve that. If your car has EGR, you will need to ej22 with egr port in the head too. If not you might get engine light from time to time.
  4. Seen a few of the ea82 cars where the exhaust pipe is coming apart and bits of metal will jam between the turbine blade and the housing. You spin it with your fingers and they will fall back in the uppipe, to just jammed in the turbo again later. If you take the turbo off you will probably see little dings or chips out of the exhaust blades.
  5. You can get oem quality thermostats from napa, when doing EJ motors, I put the oe# in the interchange box, and a real high quality made in japan thermostat pops up and usually in stock. Costs about $20, if you search by make/model, they only show the cheap 5$ ones that fail in about 2 weeks in a ej motor. More convenient than running to the dealer. One thing not to buy at napa, clutch cable for a brat or other ea81 cars. I got one for my 85 brat about 2 years ago, the clutch very hard to push and the cable broke in about 2 months. Got one from schucks, clutch was easier than ever and no problems since then.
  6. So what are people using for parking brakes that have xt6 rear & impreza front hubs ? The xt6 still hard parking brakes on the front caliper I thought. Anyone just do xt6 front and back swaps or there some other problem doing it that way?
  7. I do like the side hood vents in those early cars, didnt come back till 15 years later in the impreza rs/outback sport.
  8. This is an unfinished ej-ej swap in a 95 impreza. In 2007 I got a twin turbo legacy motor, had the heads rebuilt, got single turbo exhaust manifolds & up/down pipe, turbo, intercooler, intake and lots of other bits. And for the last 3 years there its sits on a stand just about ready togo. Everytime I think about finishing it, gas goes up so I put it off so I can stick with the cheap gas.
  9. My 85 brat went from ea81 4sp to a 5 speed ea82 trans, fairly easy swap. Got some pics and conversion info on the brat page http://www.cardomain.com/id/bobjr94
  10. I should have waved, I turned at 260th & Mtn HWY this morning, I go that way when I stop by Fred Meyers for lunch supplies on the way to work.
  11. I drove the brat everyday from Roy to West Seattle for about 2-3 years. I dont live in the actual city of Roy, off of 8th ave s, almost to Graham. Now Im driving the 4rd impreza most days but still use use the brat on days when I picking up parts or take it to the Valley 6 drive in on summer weekends.
  12. No Longer own. From about 1999, my 96 2dr, had 43,000 miles when I got it. No Longer own. From about 2005 my 03 WRX, didnt do a whole lot with it, new turbo & up-pipe, intake & exhaust. Was a plain jane just off lease car when I got it at auction. From about 2007 my 85 BRAT. Got it for about 300$ from the junk yard, they were going to save the t-tops and junk the rest. Only had 118,00 miles, still need to do something with the wheels. Also now a 5SP dual range trans. Did this about a year ago, my 95 Impreza. Still got a turbo motor sitting on a stand to go in it one day. Its got tinted windows now, Ill get a new pic tomorrow. And my wifes old Baja
  13. Its a great swap, make your car seem as if it has alot more power, no more screaming up a hill at 4000rpm in 3rd or bogging down at 1500 in 4th. I only had to bump up the tunnel in 1 spot. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2619108
  14. Had a chance to take it out ? Was wondering what kind of mileage an ej would get in a 2300 lb car
  15. Thats because its the easiest way for them to get a 2 door car again. They never sold a 2dr wrx in the US and it would be cool to get a turbo coupe back again.
  16. Ive worked on those 86-90ish fords with the 2 fuel pump setup, one had a bad fuel pressure regulator and was running about 90lbs of pressure.
  17. I did a 5 speed in my 85, thats a 2nd gen though so it was easier. http://www.fakewrx.com/bobska/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=22&Itemid=42 Still might help
  18. I put an ea81 dual carb setup on a ea82 and it didnt make much difference, I would expect similar results on an ea81 unless you get better exhaust and maybe a cam regrind. It just took more work since it had a manual choke. I put a 5 speed in my ea81 brat, made it seem faster. No running up hills at 4000rpm in 3rd or bogging down at 1600 in 4th. The next step is fuel injection off an ea82. People say it ads some power and they run alot better.
  19. I put did a sohc 2.5 into my 96 1.8 car a while ago. Kept the 2.5 manifold with 1.8 throttle body. Fairly easy swap, drove the car in saturday with the 1.8 and drove it home that night with the 2.5. I have more info and pics on my site http:www.fakewrx.com Needed to change the injector plugs, since the phase 2 motors use different injectors, but as long as you get the plugs on the motor you can splice them into the wiring harness.
  20. The water passages were just cast in the block, I believe the US models did the same thing and lost the external water pipe. I have seen problems like the engine and trans both having dowel pins so one needs to be taken out, or just alot of corrosion or rust built up will prevent the pins from going in easily. Also, make sure the clutch is properly centered, so the input shaft will slide into the clutch & pilot bearing.
  21. They are both the same trans, just bolt it down and plug it in. The trans didnt change till about 99 I believe. The only differences are internal, the one used on the 1.8 has fewer clutches, due to having 20hp less. Unless your foot is always on the floor shouldnt make much difference.
  22. I have bought probably 5 or 6 rebuilders from them over the years. The 85 Brat I drive 110 miles a day now they were going to save the t-tops and scrap the rest, but I saved it.I It also helps working next door, I get to check out everything that comes in.
  23. 1. Yes. Any motor "can" be turboed. To make it last you will need to change pistions, the phase 2 2.5 has something like 10.5 compression, most turbos motors have 8.0-8.5 2. Yes. You can use any turbo, the trick is selecting the one that will work best with your motor. Use one to small you will run out of power to soon and not make top hp, get one to large and your car will seem slow because it will take along time for the turbo to kick in. The ej20 turbo would work ok on a 2.5 if you wanted to save money. If the motor has alot of miles you may need the turbo rebuilt before using it. 3. Either can be better. ej20=stronger ej25=more hp
  24. That cust. mainfold would stick out of your hood, looks quite a bit taller than the stock one. Ive had dual carbs on a 79 ea71 and on a 86 ea82, a little power gain but not much, it would probably be like 5-7 if you dynoed it, so maybe going from 73 to 80 would be the most you can expect. A single weber would probably be the same, 500$ + carb sticking out of the hood may not be worth 5hp. Cheapest thing is just use an adapter & weber.
  25. My guess would be the trans is sitting to high on the crossmember. On my brat I left just enough room so it wouldnt rattle as it moved around. If you havent found it this was my little write up on it. http://www.fakewrx.com//index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=22&Itemid=42
