Hi....my 1990 loyale is idling really high on starting...but settles down once it warms up....also if it is cold sometimes it doesnt start at all....i have been looking thru the threads and checked the ce light under the dash...it blinks 5 times....can someone please help....oh, i also just had a new timing belt put on last week...and the battery, distributor cap and ignition coil are all new....

also...i have just read about using the connectors under the steering wheel to check the correct codes...I had not done this previously...that's why it's blinking 5 because i did not connect any of the plugs.....but now i do not see a green one to connect....can someone please give me more info on how to check the ce light....I have spent more money on mechanics and parts than i did for the car....I am out of work right now because of back surgery and have limited funds....help

The five flashes are normal and will always be there. I think it indicates what kind of transmission is installed.

 

You didn't state if the sparkplugs were changed. If not, you might check those out.

warm up the car to operating temperature

shut it off, connect green plugs (should be under the dash, or under the hood, by the wiper motor)

turn the key in the "on" position, dont start the car yet

push the gas pedal all the way in for 2 seconds, then halfway for 2 seconds

let off the gas, start the car

drive it around at rpm's above 2000 until the ECS or Check Engine illuminates

pull over, check the codes then

 

my '86 idles high on starting... always has

 

as long as it gradually kicks down while its warming up it should be OK

 

check your battery terminals, that was my no-start problem when cold at least

Your Loyale, the green connectors are under the hood, by wiper motor.

 

After doing the check proceedure, if the ECS light on dash blinks then stays lit, check codes. If it blinks and keeps blinking then you have no codes. Since no codes but the model code(that's what the 5 flashes are) came up without either connected, that means you didn't have any active codes to begin with.

 

If you want to read past codes, do the same proceedure, but with only the white "read" connector under dash hooked up. This will output stored codes that are not currently active, but have occurred in the past. Often bad connections will cause a code to set momentarily, then fix itself, leaving the code behind. If you get a code in READ mode, but not in D-check(that's the green connectors) then it may be a connection related, intermittent problem
