April 21, 200718 yr Will ea81 pistons fit my ea82? I know the bore and stroke are the same for these engines, but what about wrist pin diameter and placement? are the 8.7:1 pistons notched for valve clearance? does anybody have any pics of them?
April 21, 200718 yr It'll work yes, I would recommend putting in new wrist pin bushings and getting them honed. Just dont throw any timing belts, It'll make a mess without the reliefs. -Mike
April 22, 200718 yr Carbed EA81's and EA82's use the same pistons I am pretty sure. Except in 86 I think, the EA82 used the 8.7 to 1?
April 22, 200718 yr Author Carbed EA81's and EA82's use the same pistons I am pretty sure. Except in 86 I think, the EA82 used the 8.7 to 1? Specs fro EA82 here list Carbed 9.0, SPFI,MPFI non-turbo 9.5. Turbo 7.7 The EA81 carbed are 8.7? If they fit an EA82, and are at all sturdy, they might make good pistons for a turbo EA82. Is the wrist pin position relative to the deck the the same? Same length and diameter wrist pin?
April 22, 200718 yr The way I knew it was. EA81 carbed: 9.0 EA81 dual carbed: 9.5 EA81 turbo: 7.7? EA82 carbed 85, 87 and on: 9.0 EA82 carbed 86: 8.something EA82 turbo: 7.7 EA82 SPFI: 9.5 I'll have to look in my manual. EDIT: my US service manual does say 8.7 to 1 for the EA81. Interesting. I'll have to go out the the shed to check my Austrailan manual. Ok.. My Australian Gregory's Service manual has this. EA71: 9.0 EA81 79-80: 8.7 EA81 81-87: 9.2 EA82 85, 87 and on: 9.0 EA82 86: 8.7 This is carbed models only. I guess it changed a fair bit around the world.
