'91 EJ22 installed in my vanagon has been running code free for more than a year. CEL came on the other day - flashing 22. Finding the knock sensor cracked, I picked up and installed a new one, thinking this was a pretty straight-forward issue. Unplugged the ECU overnight to clear codes, hooked everything back up and......still flashing 22. What's up? Do I need to do something else to completely purge the code from my ECU, or is there still come issue with the Knock Sensor or it's circuit? The wiring seems fine, connection between the harness and the sensor seems solid. What am I missing?

 

Just did some additional searching an noted that exposed wire could cause the code - the plastic part of the male side of my plug seems to be missing and the connector is a bit exposed - maybe this is my problem? Considering clipping the plug on both ends and replacing with a simple paddle connector?

Could be; the ECU wants to see a certain impedance presented by the knock sensor; there could be a wiring issue elsewhere. Is the new knock sensor to block mating surface clean, and is the bolt torqued properly?

The code is for both the sensor and the circuit to it. I recommend you check the wire connection between the sensor and the ECU and see if it ohms out okay.
