Does anyone know what the black box under rear bumper on the opposite side ot exhaust / tail pipe is for?

Charcoal Evap canister for emissions. The older cars have them next to the engine, the newer cars have them tucked under the bumper near the gas tank.

Yes. And the number of hoses and pipes in that area can be somewhat alarming.
