My Check engine light just came on

Featured Replies

This morning was really cold, and after starting my 95 Legacy, the CEL came on. For a few seconds, the car idled at about 2200 and then dropped to 1000 and went back to 2200. It did this twice and then stabilized at 1K and seemed okay. I drove the car for a few blocks and everything seemed fine. I then parked and stop/started the car, but the light came back on.

I had to go to work, so I drove it as is and it seems okay. Does anyone have any clues on what may be wrong before I bring it to the dealer tomorrow. The car was sold without warranty, but they guarantee the car will pass inspection so they have to fix it (I hope at their cost).

Thanx,

Peter

I did a search and will try a couple of things - I should search first.

Go to an Auto Zone. They check the codes for free. It might be something like engine coolent temp. sensor or something minor.

Get the code pulled to be sure. And after you fix it, unhook the battery for 30 minutes and hook it back up and it'll reset it.

MAKE SURE the gas cap is tight by hearing the ratchet noise on final crank. Reset ECU by either pulling ENG IGN fuse or disconnecting battery ground for 30 minutes or more. Otherwise, expect to put about 3 tanks of gas thru the engine and if you have no other CEL issues, the light will go out. Get the codes read for free and report back & we will go from there.
