I've seen the 3AT referenced as a M-41 tranny too, for what that's worth.

yaeh that helps a lil.. im doin it on the 4eat though sorry i shuolda been more specific. so if anyone knows the name of that tranny lemme know or ill prolly end up bein stuck goin over to or callin up subaru for some infro

What the FSM parts book shows is the 4EAT as F-4WAT.

Stands for Fulltime 4wd auto transmission.

Theres aslo the 4AT, which is the 4 speed auto FWD.

The actual part number for the case of the 4WAT is TX86K3E1BA.

Does this help?

The model designation from the trans manufacturer(Aisin?) is

the R4AX-EL. This is the model number to use when trying to find rebuild parts. There may be variations like R4AX-ELxxxx for slightly different applications.

All the Subaru 4spd automatics are basically the same trans, From 88-2005. But small changes, like the addition of an external filter mean there are several different kits available for rebuild.
