thunk!

Featured Replies

When I'm rough on the clutch I get a big thunk. This is particularly noticable when I step on the clutch pedal quickly in first gear.

Is there something broken? Maybe a tranny mount?

Can you tell what area the thunk is coming from?

I've drag raced a couple wrx and STi cars. They all have a thunk from the rear end when hitting gears.

Sounds like it's coming from the front, and it doesn't happen when engaging the clutch, just when I disengage it abruptly.

sounds like a motor mount, but could be other things. check the pitch rod device on the top of the motor as well, they can crack, though i've never heard of noises resulting from that. not sure of a good way to test motor mounts.

The mounts can visually look ok, but still be torn apart. I had a set of the round style that fell apart when I took out the motor on one of the legacy's.

If you stand over the motor and rev it up manually, does it seem like the engine is twisting off the crossmember excessively?

If you can get under the car you can inspect the tranny mount visually, and also jack it up some and see what the mount looks like when put under stress.

How much is excessive? I'm not sure I've ever looked at a normal one for comparison.

Its more of a judgement call on that. But I'd say if it rotates more than 5 degrees something isn't cosher.
