Motor mount: how do I get this stinking bolt out?!

Featured Replies

98 Impreza 2.2L. I'm replacing the motor mounts and am stuck.

The motor mounts are attached to the engine by a bracket and two bolts. The bolt in front of the crossmember is easy to get out, but how the heck do you get that rear one out? It's directly behind the crossmember. I can get at it with an open end wrench on the passenger's side, but not the driver's side. On the passenger's side I can't even get enough leverage to budge the damned thing.

Any suggestions? I'm about an hour away from giving up.

Like he said. You have to lift the engine a bit. Not sure, but I think you have to unbolt the front part of the trans stay or the trans will prevent the engine to lift.

Had the engine up a little more than 2" above the center crossmember, just like the write-up on scoobymods. Stuck a hunk of 2x4 in there and everything. I wouldn't go any higher than that without draining the coolant and disconnecting the hoses because they were getting tugged on pretty good.

Did you get the bolts out?

Maybe unbolt the radiator and move it up some and jack some more.

I had a bit of an emergency so I had to button it back together without replacing the mounts. The problem I was having is gone now, though, so maybe one of the bolts wasn't torqued down right. This car got a replacement engine last winter, so maybe the mechanic who installed it missed one, or maybe something worked loose.

In any case, it no longer goes THUNK when I stick the clutch pedal in too abrubtly or stop too quickly.

Probably was something loose then. At least its gone now, and you've ogt mounts just incase those do go out for real.
