I hope you don't think I was trying to put down you're motivation to replace. I am very glad that everything is worked out well.

 

It certainly can't hurt to put the new ones in, My point was that for an engine with 270,000 miles, the HLA's would have still worked for as long as the engine will, and with a little time and driving, and some ATF (really, it works great) You could get em to quite down a bit. It just wasn't nessecary. But more power to you for putting the love in to you're Soobie.

Trust me, I was pacing in the garage saying "Should I?....Nah....but...should I really?...."

 

I'm going to try and work magic with ATF and/or seafoam on the right side.

To be honest, this road warrior has been knocking almost since I've owned it (my first Soobie) and just thought that's how they sounded. HA HA. I'm pretty anal about car maintenance so I've always treated it well.

 

How much AFT do you suggest I add to the oil??

Gloyale is right that most will go away without replacement, but i would not be surprised if it never goes away, or not completely in your case. like i've said, i've seen them seized and unmovable - soaking in various detergents and with heat, vices, still didn't budge. in those cases, they will not be freed if they remain in the engine.

My car burns and leaks a bit of oil, so I have to top off the oil every 2-3 weeks. When the car was ticking and there was room for oil I added a half quart. After another week, it was still ticking a little, so I added another half quart.(it was tad overfull for a bit) At this high a concentration I change the oil again after 500-1000 miles since the *cleaners* in the ATF break down the oil a bit. No more than a full quart till I changed the oil. I had to repeat this through about 3 oil changes before my ticking finally stopped(almost completely).

 

Now I just change my oil every 3000 miles or 4 months, which ever comes first. If the ticking comes back after an oil change I now add about 2 ounces(2 shots) of ATF with the oil and that's enough. I'll run with this small amount for the full 3000 miles.

like Gloyale said, but i'll phrase it differently - the more you use, the less it should be driven. it's subjective and i don't know that there are any hard numbers to go on. i probably wouldn't add more than a quart for actual daily driving duties and i wouldn't keep it in there for an entire oil change interval. if you wanted to run 2 quarts or 50/50, then a quick drive to operating temps or maybe 100-200 miles is all i would do. i've done it, but i'm not saying i recommend it - if it's something you wanted to try i'd limit it. for a bottle of seafoam or half a quart i'd be comfortable, and have, run that for 1,000-3,000 miles.

I added a half quart today during an oil change (used 40w this time vs 30w).

We'll she how she goes.

 

I am glad to see though that my engine gasket set job worked. No leaks after a 60 mile drive. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
