September 24, 200718 yr Here's the deal. Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag, has a FT4WD tranny that leaks fluid, which drips on the exhaust and causes a big stink. The fluid that is in the tranny has aluminum flakes, so something is wearing internally. Should I try and fix this tranny or just replace it. The J-Yard is having a 1/2 off sale this week-end, and there are a few GL's around, though I'm not sure if they are turbos (spline count issue w/ turbo vs non-turbo). I do like the all-wheel drive aspect of the current tranny, but I've never work on the internals of a tranny, and I'm not sure if I want to attemp a rebuild, as a swap would take less time and effort. Any thoughts?
September 25, 200718 yr Def do a swap. Trannys are very complicated things to tackle and if dont correctly by a shop are quit expensive. If you have metal flakes coming out in the tranny oil that baby is toast. Go get a jy tranny and swap it in or convert the car to 5 speed . Lots more fun.
September 25, 200718 yr swap it out dude.......then open your FT box up to see whats fanged inside....
September 25, 200718 yr Spline count on autos are all the same. Only the manual turbos are 25 count splines. Hush
September 25, 200718 yr Author BTW: The FT4WD is a 5 speed manual made for the RX series. I put it in last year when I ditched the crappy 3 spd A/T. I have to get a 5 speed from a turbo model to match the spline count on my turbo GL-10.
