October 4, 200718 yr I've got my 87 GL (EA82) wagon in the shop. The mechanic has rebuilt the carb. and replaced the intake manifold gasket. But it is still pulling air into the engine. Spraying carb choke cleaner anywhere on top of the engine increases the rpm significantly. Less than 90,000 miles on the vehicle. Compression on all four cylinders is a very uniform 150 psi. Any suggestions would be appreciated. RM
October 4, 200718 yr Author I did not put a wrech on the bolts but I don't think this mechanic would of made that mistake.
October 4, 200718 yr A little more specific about where you are spraying would be helpful. Has to be an opening/gasket/hose of some sort. Was it pulling air before the mechnic worked on it?
October 4, 200718 yr Author The mechanic is still working on it. I think he up to $400 parts and labor, ouch. He had the air filter enclosure removed and all the disconnected vacuum line plugged. He sprayed near the right head intake, center top front of the block and left head area, all gave similar increase in rpm's. Wierd! His next step is to one by one block every vacuum line to try and find the source. I don't understand how the leak can be sucking from these places that are so far apart.
October 4, 200718 yr get a mechanic's stethoscope and hunt around for the leak. A piece of tubing will do in a pinch.
