  1. This differs depending on what seller the exhaust is bought through. It's a crapshoot in that regard. Mine fit on just fine. There's no interference and the header traces a nice clean line around the filter. There's about 1/8" of the filter that hangs inside the curve of the header and there's clearance on all sides.
  2. Yes, that's the one I deleted. I'm running a flat flange with a thick gasket there where mine connects to the catback.
  3. Gotcha, sorry I missed your comment. Must have been posted while I was answering the other post! Chances are that there is a donut gasket at the back end of your stock cat pipe. When I installed my catback I removed the donut gasket and cut the small stub of pipe off the flange. I then used a flat flange & gasket for attaching my exhaust adapter which steps up to the 3" catback. Just be aware of that incase you want to go back to your stock exhaust.
  4. What are you needing done at the shop? You can remove and install the entire exhaust in your driveway if you've got a pair of jackstands and some tools. That's assuming you don't need anything fabricated.
  5. Chances are you'll get rasp by running catless. You can diminish it somewhat by getting a resonator installed anywhere before the muffler. Traditionally it'd go close to where the cat usually is.
  6. I got a bit of rasp when I dropped my catback entirely. That went away once the 3" was installed.
  7. Check for the EJ stamping on the block... EJ22 has EJ22 stamped on it, EJ25 has EJ25 on it. Then count the cams.
  8. pwned Seems fitting for a sleeper STi swapped wagon!
  9. Welcome!! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50768 Timing belt procedure for the EA82
  10. Check the fitment of the relay in the socket. Our 2000 OBK had the same issue and it wound up being a bad connection in the relay socket. I spread the pins on the relay and haven't had any issues since.
  11. True, you unfortunately can't use this as a hard and fast measure of if the HG's in the motor are good or not. If the HG's were replaced but the tech didn't clean the overflow bottle then you're still going to see that residue in there. It's a good thing to check but it's easier to determine HG issues by looking at the driver's side of the engine from underneath the car. The HG leak tends to evidence itself by dark marks at the joint of the head to the block. The coolant typically drips onto the exhaust manifold and evaporates while the engine is running which is why you won't typically see puddles of coolant from this type of leak.
  12. Where are you seeing the oil? If it's at the front on or around the timing belt cover then I'd suspect your crank seal. If it's on the heads then I'd suspect your cam seals or HG.
  13. Here's my 2.5 RS with borla replica header, stock cat pipe, and a 3" catback from a GD WRX (BBP brand). The catback is virtually a straight pipe. There's a resonator near the cat flange and then the muffler at the back but they don't do a whole lot.
  14. Tom, If you're keeping the stock cat and catback then don't expect too much more noise. The rumble is more pronounced/defined but it's not a great deal louder until you swap the catback. Mine went from "that's a neat little sound" with the stock catback to "OMG it's the apocalypse" when I installed the catback. If you go with a catback, keep your stock cat in place. That'll avoid you throwing a CEL. I got a P0420 when I first installed the header on my 2.5RS but it hasn't returned after I cleared the codes last week.
  15. Another alternative (albeit with more work involved and more geared to a street car rather than a crawler) is to put EJ25 heads on your EJ22 block. This will effectively drop your compression and allow you to run some boost quite happily.
  16. Carpeting a sub or speaker box is dead easy. Just like wrapping a christmas present Set your carpet on the floor, outer side DOWN. put your box on top of the carpet in the center of the piece. You can trace around the outline of the box with a sharpie or chalk. Once you've marked one side out, roll the box onto another side and mark that out. Continue doing this until you have all sides marked out and you'll have a flat pattern drawn on the carpet which you can then cut out. It should look similar to this one except you won't have the little angled pieces (you can put them in if you want to but they'll overlap and the carpeting won't be smooth) Use spray adhesive to attach the carpet to the box. Plan on removing the sub from the box, carpeting the box, and then cutting the circle out of the carpet where it covers the speaker hole and re-mounting the sub. That'll make it MUCH easier than trying to get the carpet edges to line up right with the speaker installed.
  17. These two statements are far too broad. You haven't taken into account the OP's location, goals, or abilities. There's a LOT that can be done to NA engines to increase HP. While the gains on NA engines may not be what they would on an FI engine that doesn't mean that the OP may not consider them worth pursuing. Bolt ons like exhaust headers, and a catback can be had for a decent price. I've got less than $180 in my installation on my 2.5RS. Intakes can be sourced from alternative vehicles, the '94 Accord CAI works just fine on the GC platform and can be had for $30 or less off eBay. Look around, be creative and you might find something that works just as well for your particular application. Lightweight (but not underdriven) pulleys can help free up some HP by decreasing the rotating mass. It'll make your car a little trickier to launch off the line but if you're looking at more pull through the twisties it'll help a little. You could consider a change in fuel. A number of people have reported good HP gains by running a 40% E85 mix. Even more gains are possible by upgrading your injectors, & fuel pump, running 1 step colder plugs and going straight E85. The number of NA vehicles running around with either a mild turbo kit or M62 supercharger installed flies in the face of the perception that 'NA motors will grenade when boosted'. If you're reasonable in your expectations of what the stock NA bottom end can handle then you're safe. Head wise you can do a port and polish job at home if you're careful. Delta Cams are worth a look in. You can score a used set off some forums for $150-$200. EJ22? Put some EJ25 heads on it and a turbo kit. EJ25? Put some phase II EJ22 heads on it and run a high-compression build. In today's economy time is money for a lot of people. If you can't afford to change vehicles there's nothing wrong with doing what you can to the one you've got! It's like the old 305/327 vs 350 argument. Just because higher gains are easier to reach with a 350 doesn't mean you should discount working over a 305/327 if that is what you have available to use.
  18. The HG's can be done with the engine in the car. A few of the dealership techs I know prefer to do them in the car rather than pulling the engine. A bit tight on the driver's side but it's workable. You can get more clearance by undoing the engine mount on one side and jacking the motor up a little. Reinstall that mount when you're done with that side and then repeat for the other side.
  19. No probs mate! There's a few guys in the 2.5RS world who are playing around with supercharging an NA engine. Some opt for a bottom end build also while others just boost the stock engine at a moderate level (5psi or so) You'll obviously need to run some form of EMS, be it a standalone or piggyback to handle the fueling issues.

  21. That's awesome man! I just sold a set of DOHC EJ25 heads on Craigslist locally and I sent 1/2 of the profit to a mate of mine. He GAVE me the heads a couple of years ago, doesn't know I sold them, and certainly wouldn't expect anything from me if he did know. Wish I could be there when he opens the envelope with the money order in it Good feeling ain't it? Oh, and I went from this: To this:
  22. That's fair enough. The GC platform was my first love in the Subie world. Not that I didn't love my 82 Brat but I've been drooling over the GC's since the first WRX hit the shores back in OZ dressed like this:
