Catalytic Converter

Featured Replies

Hi guys, it's me again :) Hope you all had a great holiday! I have a question....I have gotten the check engine light twice now. Got it checked today and was told it was the rear oxygen sensor was showing high oxygen content coming out of the catalytic converter. My husbands friend at the shop told me that the dealer has told him a few years ago that switching gas may solve the problem. He has in the last 2 years replaced at least a 6 catalytic converters to resolve this issue, he also said that only OE Subaru converters will solve the problem; he has been bit in the butt by using aftermarket converters and gets high oxygen content on the rear 02 sensors. I have 128K miles on my 05 Legacy (that I purchased 8/04 (don't faint). Does this sound legit and has anyone else had to replace one yet?

Thanks for your help as always!

Was the code P0420? If so, the cause is often a marginal front sensor. With the mileage you have, it's worth looking at.

Thanks for the response, fiancee didn't catch the code unfortunately. Is it about this mileage where I would have a problem with the converter?

no, definitely not. follow OB99W's suggestions above, or have the code checked again and tell us exactly what it is.

if you ever have the codes read the best thing to do is to right down the actual code that the machine reads and let us know.
