Fuel pump?

Featured Replies

86' GL Wagon runs....5 mins later it dies from no gas [it will do this a couple times]. Hard to believe it would be gas filter. I am assuming its the pump.

Whats the best way to check the pump, and where is the blasted thing? Can I pull a line off an turn on the key and will it pump then or is there a regulator or such?

The problem may be due to a bad relay. I would check that out. If the pump has no voltage across the leads when this happens then see if the relay is at fault.

The pump should be near the right rear passenger area, mounted under the car. The leads to it are under the rear seat.

Under the rear seat...interesting. So there should be voltage without the key on/with the key on? Where would the relay be located?

Pics?

I do not know if I agree with this.

How long has it been since the fuel filter was changed?

If when it starts to die can you keep it running

with starting fluid?

If you want a simple test, remove the line to the carb.

Place in jar.

When the key is turned on it should pump gas for like two seconds then shut off.

The wiring as Cougar says the wiring runs under the seat.

The power is supplied to the pump via the FP relay.

Pump is on a small shelf under the car.

The ground for the pump (which controls the on/off function)

Is controled by the ECU....

(if you have an 02 sensor you have an ECU)

If no ECU then the revolution sensor controls the ground -on/off

of the pump.

Hope some of this helps.

Fuel filter was changed 3 months ago. Could be it, but I doubt it.

No O2 sensor [never was]. There is hardly any wires left in this. Emissions and all but necessary stuff has been removed, its pretty bare bones.

I ran it and stood by with ether. When it started to die, I gave it a sniff and it would keep running. It would start with ether if I tried it.

There is no gas to the carb.

try jumpering the fuel pump (disconnect wires, attach 12V to the "+" side and ground the other side) start the car - if it runs then the pump is fine and you need to chase the relay or some other electrical gremlin.

DON'T DRIVE AROUND with the fuel pump jumpered - by the way - this is just for diagnostics -

I'll do it....if the snow ever stops.
