January 12, 200818 yr quickie question for those that know.... 1990 Legacy EJ22 - do they have hydralic or solid lifters?? thanks in advance!
January 12, 200818 yr Right on, that'd be hydraulic. Another source of high engine friction is the valve train. Hydraulic lash adjusters (HLAs) are always in contact with the valves. The hydraulic pressure of the lash adjuster must be overcome during operation and during the most critical time of engine start. To overcome this situation and to contribute to the total reduction of friction loss, 1997 and later SOHC engines have solid valve adjusters.
January 13, 200818 yr Author hey thanks guys! the other half's 90 Leggy sedan started ticking the other day which brought up the question...he is due for an oil change, so that should clear it up... I knew the newer models had changed to solid, but wasnt sure about the early ones - still learning about these cars!

The dohc 2.5L '97+ I think has the bucket&shim style lifters with 94 shim sizes. The '90 Legacy 2.2L has the hydraulic lash adjusters. Actually that engine probably has the large HLA's.
