New Subaru Owner from the east coast

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. Just thought I'd introduce myself and make myself a known active member. I'm from Maine, where there is a very active Subaru enthusist scene; http://xsorbit27.com/users5/subarutunersofmaine/index.php

I have just recently purchased an '83 GL wagon. It is the oldest car in my driveway and almost the cleanest car. I was beside myself when I was crawling around it, to find no rust. NONE. My intentions for this car was nothing more than cheap, reliable transportation. Now I'm slowly planning on making it offroad capable. I am trying to do this as cheap and smart as possible, since this is an old car that I paid little for, and I can't justify spending lots of money in it. I want it to remain a daily driver, but have the ability to take it out on some class IV and V roads and the occasional offroad park and trails. Any pointers and/or recommendations you guys can give me would be great. I'm still learning lots about this EA81, and I'm still lost at times :)

Howdy Goldie,

Welcome to the good ship USMB

Sounds like a real Nice wagon

but

Please (you will be asked many times) post

some pictures of this gem.

Also being from the rust coast I would luv to see it.

As far as lifting and taller tires, engine up grades

If you look around you will see dozens and dozens of

posts/pictures

The things that helped my Brat of similar vintage are

larger exhaust coupled with a Weber carb.

Many posts on this also exist.

Have a good time and yes this is green

as in with envy.

Thanks for the info Skip. I will get pictures up as soon as I can. I might have some that the previous owner sent me. I'll check on that. I have to say, she is a beauty.... :)

I haven't even thought of a carb upgrade, I will definately look into that. I'd love to swap the engine out, but at the same time I don't. There are 3 swapped cars at my house already, and i feel like that takes away from the daily driver/no nonsense aspect I have in mind for this car.

I found these 2. I had an engine bay shot and a rear shot, but I can't find them...

Honestly, after the 4 wheel drive, the gold with red rims was a huge selling point :)

Now I have an odd question. Why doesn't my posts info count all of the posts I've made? It seems to only count the ones I've made in this here topic...

My pleasure and lookin' forward to the picts

(there is a post to read about sizing, please)

The Weber makes my EA81 more drivable as

the factory "HiCrappy" is troublesome to some.

You may have the factory one barrel Weber?

Sounds like you know which end of a ratchet clicks

=>you will have a lot of fun with your new prize.

Just for some fun reading you might download

a copy of

"How to keep your Subaru Alive"

A.K.A. HTKYSA

I'll see if I can find Andy's link to it for you

if you want.

Sorry, timing issue.

That is sooooo nice lookin'

Nice find well done sir loin.

If you have posted in some of the other forums

the post count does not add to your count

it may take a day or so for your profile to update.

I saw that car for sale on craigslist Maine. I go up there a few times a year. I was thinking about it but we really wanted an automatic GL wagon. Still do actually someday. Good luck with it!

How many miles? Im assuming it wasnt from maine otherwise it would be a rot box. That thing is sweet. Good luck with it.

its funny, i passed up the car in those pics because of rust/poorly repaired rust (still have the pics of the rust/bondo)

if i remember correctly the lady brought it up from New Mexico years ago. it needed a couple tires and something else.

It has 141k miles! And she had the rust re-fixed and re-painted. But i'd be interested in seeing those pictures. It also needs a front CV shaft.

And yeah, the car is from New Mexico, it hasn't been in Maine for too long. I'm only the 3rd owner :)
