Heater Fan quit

Featured Replies

The heater fan in my 88 wagon has gone south. I took the dash part off to check the switch, levels 2 and 3 already didn't work, I was unable to get any power out of it. I then checked the fan, no power there either. Yesterday I smelled "something" burning, I think it was wires:rolleyes: , then today It stopped working all together. Oh the fuse is still good too.

I have no idea what to do.

Jeff

Does the fan work with 12 v applied?

If not, replace fan.

If it works, but there is just no voltage to it, try to track down the short, or just run a new wire for the 12v(fused of course)

2 and 3 not working is the fault of the resitor block in the duct.

Hi Jeff, having no blower motor op this time of year is

"not cool" well it is actually.

Sounds like you might have more than one issue.

First the one problem Gloyal points out

Two of the speeds that failed were from a bad resistor block.

Located Under the glove box behind the

blower motor.

pictured here

resistorblock.jpg

Power is fed to the blower motor directly from the

blower relay (located under the dash above the

ECU (there will be several there).

With the key on you should see power on one wire

at the blower.

Speed is controlled by the switch using the resistors

in the block.

This puts the negative or ground side on the motor.

Note: high speed (#4) is direct and by passes the

resistor block giving full ground to the motor.

Sounds like your blower may have had issues

(mice nests most common). This

causing it to draw

more current that it should

but not enough to

blow the fuse

This resulted in the relay contacts going toast.

Hope this help, wrong time of the year for no

blower motor.

I'll check it out. I have the blower motor out and there wasn't any kind of nest in there I was thinking the same thing. But It could be that one of those blocks just "gave up" it has 225,000 miles on it so little things like this might be bound to happen. Thank you for the advice.

Jeff

Hi Jeff, you are most welcome.

Please remember the resistor block is by passed

in the high speed position.

If this position does not work, you have more issues

than just the resistor block.

If the relay is toast and you do not want to dig for it

(real PITA in my expierence).

You could run a fused wire from a good positive

battery source.

The cig lighter comes to mind

as it is fused and is somewhat high current.

Plus it is switched by the ignition.

Good luck.

Duh, It was late when I answered that post last night. I wan't remebering that the power for the fan comes from a relay.

You probably need a new relay.

The relay is up under the dash, mounted in a group with 3 other relays. Not really that big of a pain to get to. Alot easier than running a new wire.

The 2 headlight relays(one for each side), and the Rear defogger relay.

All those relays are the same type, roundish, mounted in a bracket, left of the steering column.

RH headlight= black connector

LH headlight=green connector

Rear defogger= blue connector

Blower relay connector should be white, or clearish. Swap it with the defogger relay as a test.

I got into it, and did all the stuff you guys said. I still had no fan blowing, so I took the blower motor apart, just to find that it had work the brushes all the way down the the copper wire, then through the wire. The only thing left was the spring and a lot of shavings.
