Rear brakes Have had rubbing of caliper on disc. After removing pads, which were in good condition, I noticed that the lock pin boots are torn. The lock pin was easy to remove with 14mm socket but how does the guide pin come out of the mounting bracket? I ordered caliper rebuild kit from Napa and after receiving it today it looks nothing like what I need. The image attached shows what my rear brake looks like. The lock pin takes two boots, one on each side. The guide pin on top takes one guide pin boot.

hehe nice image! If your napa rebuild kit doesn't seem to have the right parts, it might be for later model soobs which have different guide/lock pin styles.

The guide pin is screwed in, isn't it?

 

Still, you don't need to get it off/out to change the boots.

those pins should just screw out. look from the front and back for something to unscrew it should be straight forward.

 

all of the brake caliper rebuild kits i've bought only come with the piston boots, clips and seal. And maybe a new bleeder screw cover. They've never come with new boots for the pins, that would be nice though. I guess that's what you were hoping for, not sure where to get those but i'm sure someone has replaced them before.

RockAuto has complete caliper repair kits by Beck/Arnley that come with pin boots and little rubber bushing that slides onto one of the pins.

 

They also sell the pin boot kits, also listed under caliper bushing kits on these sites, separately.

for what vehicles? i've bought from rock auto and Beck/Arnley kits before from a local store and never got pin boots. maybe the older stuff (EA/ER) never has the pin boots, but the EJ stuff does?

I usually check only for my car for which they do offer complete axle sets including everything in the upper photo.

 

After checking for floater's 96 Outback, I see that they do not offer complete kits, perhaps because there seems to be more variation among the different brake systems among the earlier new generation models (i.e., sedan vs. station wagon), but don't quote me on this.

 

Nonetheless, they do offer the "caliper pin boot kits"/ "caliper bushing kits" separately. Funny thing is that they offer the same items under these two different headings. From what I've ordered for my Forester and other vehicles, the rubber parts offered by Wagner seem to of higher quality than, say, Raybestos, Carlson, or any of these other suppliers.

 

The parts I received were even made in the USA, but who knows how quickly supply chains change?
