XT and L series crank nose form ?

Featured Replies

I was reading an old thread here about someone over there fitting an XT spider engine to an L series car . They mentioned that the XT's crank has a keyway for it polly V belt where the L EA82 does not for its normal V belt pulley .

I dont want to run the polly v belt but I have a good XT crank so is it going to be a problem fitting the V belt pully to the XT crank .

This was not an issue I had known about so need a solution to it before the engine is due to go in .

Thanks for the heads up , cheers Adrian in Australia .

Cranks are functionally the same, same keyway etc..all xt poly-v belt pulleys can be swapped with normal v-belt setup or vice-versa, the issue is with timing the engine as the spider intake blocks the timing hole in the bell housing hence why with the spider setup they moved the timing to the crank pulley. Don't see you should have an issue using the XT crank shaft,

Thanks for that was , just about to post out findings .

One thing we can't work out is where the timing marks are on the poly V belt pulley ? We'll have to put out own on the std L crank pulley just can't find the Vortex ones .

Cheers and thanks , Adrian .

Do you really need them? Is it that impossible to see through the hole on the bellhousing to see the flywheel marks?

Yes I realize that but there must be some mark on the pulley that lines up with those on the pointer plate and we can't see any .

BTW this engine has the Spider Turbo Voltex manifold on it because thats what the engine is - 9/87 Australian spec AWD Turbo Vortex .

Cheers A .

Howdy Adrian,

Since the engine is not in the car, can't you get to a postion

to see the flywheel window?

Or more simply bring #1 up to the top of the piston travel.

(wooden stick in the sparking plug hole).

then

Look closely at the pulley, if the mark is not there

--- punch or scribe one that lines up with 0 deg.

Skip we will be making a mark on the conventional pulley and most likely with the engine on the stand before the heads go on - dial indicator on one of the piston crowns .

I just wanted to get to the bottom of what Subaru did on the Vortex pulley mark wise .

Cheers A .

thats kewl A, sounds like you have the bases covered.

Sorry I couldn't answer the Vortex marking question.

Is it possible the pulley you have came from a Vortex

made before the 87 change to the spider manifold?

The window is visable on these thus no need for the damper marking.
