Has anybody ever thought about attempting to shorten the emergency brake handle on a EA82 Wagon ??? I'm looking to free up space .

 

Any ideas ???

One could shorten the handle so that it was no longer than the hand is wide. However, that would require more effort to operate the E-brakes.

That is what I was thinking on doing, Really the reason why I want to shorten it up is it will free up room to cut a hole out in the plastic to place a cup holder.

 

Take a cup holder from a junk car, cut it to fit the hole and glue it in.

 

I have another car non subaru that I also want to do this to.

 

I was thinking that it might not require much more effort to engage the brake because of the way it designed already, with a thumb release button.

 

Problem is I have not taken it apart yet to see how it's made or designed. Im hoping I dont have to screw with the cable itself.

 

Any input on this, anybody ever take the handle mechanicism apart?

I was just out in the shed digging around and ran across an EA-82 E-brake control.

 

You won't have to mess with the cables themselves, other than to disconnect them to remove the handle from vehicle for planned mods. You will however need to mess with the release button mechanism so it will still operate after you mod the handle.

 

And it will take slightly more effort to operate E-brake with a shorter handle, as you loose some of the advantage of the fulcrum effect of the lever action.

Hmmmm, Tom Do you think its worth doing in you opinion ?

 

Any chance you could take a pic of the handle since you already have it apart and post it on here ? If not its no big deal.. Hey thanks for going and taking time to dig the handle out and taking a look see at it.

I don't know how easy it would be to do so without tearing this one apart, and I don't plan on doing that. You'd have to either tear into yours, or get one from a parts car to tear apart and go from there.

 

As far as a cup holder goes, my travel mug sits nicely between the e-brake handle and PS seat, but that's in my BRATs. Been to long since I drove the XT6 to remember if it fit there or not. But the need for one in your ride is different than mine. It'd be your call....

Yeah, Im gonna have to hit a yard up and go get one to play with.

 

Who knows when there is a will there is a way right.

 

One think I liked about cars from the 70's and older, Shifter was on the steering colum and e-brake was under the dash as a pedal.
