aftermarket tachometer on '96 legacy?

Featured Replies

hi,

i have an aftermarket tachometer kit that i want to put in a 1996 legacy wagon which has no stock tachometer.

the kit came with instructions but they are not very good. i think i have to splice a wire in.. something to do with the ignition coil.... has anyone ever done this?

would this car have the tach wiring already behind the dash even though there is no tach?

thanks a lot!

On the circuit board in the instrument cluster there is a spot for a screw labled tach signal. That would be the most straight forward spot. However, it is really easy, like a 15 minute job, to put a subaru tachometer in the dash. I've done it a couple times to de-brighton some legacys.

yeah, that is exactly what i am doing.. this is a legacy brighton.

i think i am going to get rid of the aftermarket tach kit. kind of a hassle plus it will look dumb mounted on the dash board.

so would i have to swap in the instrument cluster from a legacy with stock tach, like find one at a wrecker or something? is that what you'd do?

so a brighton will already have the tach wiring behind the instrument cluster i just need to swap in an instrument cluster with a tach then hook it back up? just making sure. i am not that great with electrical stuff.

do you know what years i could get one out of if i do go to a wrecker to get it?

What about a replacing the whole front cluster. Would the hookup be there allready for a OEM look?

IIRC 95-99

The wiring is there, There have been several people on here de-brighton their cars, even adding power windows and cruise control!

I put a tach in my '96 brighton. I just removed the gauge cluster, traced the wire back from where the tach would normally be to the connector, and tapped that wire for the signal to the tach and it worked great. I can't remember the wire color....seems like it was green with blue stripe or blue with green stripe maybe.

The other place to tap pretty easily would be at the ignitor or coil. However since soob sparks to plugs at the same time, not sure if the tach might read double actual rpm or something?

I imagine connecting to 1, 2, 5, or 6 on the ignitor or to 1 or 3 on the coil might work?

Just put a Subaru tach in your cluster.
