I appologize if this has already been discussed. I've been gone from the board for a year or so.

 

So I finally got around to putting a 5 speed in my EJ22 Legacy, and I made an interesting observation that might apply to installing the EJ AWD tranny in the EA-series cars.

 

When I put an EJ AWD tranny in my old EA82, I got the whole EJ driveline setup and rear diff with it. The front section of the driveline (tranny to carrier bearing) was almost exactly one inch too long and had to be shortened by a driveline shop. In my case, the nearest place that could do it was 250 miles away in Canada, so it was kind of a pain.

 

When doing the tranny swap in my Legacy, I discovered that the automatic transmission driveline is almost exactly 1" shorter than the manual transmission driveline. This leads me to believe that you could just grab a driveline from an automatic Legacy when installing the EJ AWD tranny in an EA82 car, avoiding the cost and trouble of modifying a driveline. This would also mean that if you broke it in the future, you could use a ready-made replacement, rather than having to customize another one.

 

Again, sorry if this is old news. Seemed like kind of a big deal to me when I found it, so I thought I'd bring it up just to make sure.

problem is, the carrier bearing bracket is a rather substantially different. I don't think the EJ bracket would bolt up to the EA car.

 

 

I have wondered if you could swap the bracket/bearing. as the flange has a nut on it, and I bet you could press the bracket off once that's removed.

I was able to use the EJ carrier bearing with no modification. It definitely is supposed to mount a little differently, but it bolted up and ran 10,000 miles with no trouble. This was on a lifted car though, it might not fit so easily on a stock one.

AH, you had an EJ shaft modified to use in your EA car. hmmm.....interesting. AFAIK, the swaps I've heard of used EA shafts modified (I want to say lengthened....) to work with the different trans length.

 

 

definitely interesting. might also mean that a 6MT would work perfectly with a 5MT EJ shaft in an EA car (have to use the shorter AT shaft in an EJ car....), hmmm, the gears turn.....

i know when putting the 6MT into an EJ car, they can use a 4EAT shaft. so i would assume that if you were to put a 6MT into a EA82 car you could use a 4EAT EA shaft.

 

but when i put the EJ 5MT in the EA car the shaft has to be shortened 55mm.

well, I think the EA 4EAT is a different length than the EJ one....

 

did you start with an EA shaft? or an EJ one.

If I had the right drive shafts they are.

 

I also know that the flanges are the same on the ones that I have seen at least.
