September 22, 200817 yr So I've put the brumby to rest for a bit untill I can afford to fix the rust properly. I then purchased this.. its taking a bit of getting used to, I am missing the comfortable ride, and comparative performance of the brumby still... So uh.. What are some good toyota forums? and wow, it sure can leak some oil...
September 22, 200817 yr I hope youre going to find the right bed for it, not really diggin the 90 somethin bed on a 80 somethin truck :-\ Other than that, its a nice lookin truck, I love those style Toyotas!
September 22, 200817 yr Author Yeah. I will be looking out for an original deck, for now though, thats close enough. Its a 1980, with a 2L 21r
September 23, 200817 yr You sure its a 21R and not a 20R? Or a 22R? I didnt think they came out with 21R's but you guys overseas get some funky stuff. Thats a great looking truck, minus the bed. A friend of mine has a '82 with the same body. We built a flatbed for it, and are in the process of putting an exo-cage on it. Its a rock crawler. Love that body style, mine is alittle newer with the '86 Body.
September 23, 200817 yr Author Nup.. A 21R-U apparently..... 2L, but somehow different to the 18R that it's meant to have... I'd love to have the right deck on there in as good condition as this one. I can hardly fault it. Not really a big fan of flatdecks tbh... Sometimes though.
September 23, 200817 yr if you could lower that deck so the line lines up, and then put a skirt under the door that might look pretty cool! just a thought... looks to be in good shape..
December 31, 200817 yr Nice HiLux, other than that bed. Try http://www.toyotaminis.com/ I'm a member there (Red1979SR5)
July 28, 201213 yr Author Yeah, its the newest vehicle I've owned, yet has the same leaf sprung agricultural chassis as the old one. So bumpy and slow! I love it.
July 28, 201213 yr Wow nice. I remember on some show on the BBC ... Top Gear maybe? They drove a heavily modified Toyota Hilux up to the arctic circle racing a sled dog team.
July 29, 201213 yr Author Correct! Heavily modified is right, Top Gear has had a few dealings with Hiluxs over the years They're basically a religion over here.
August 3, 201213 yr Ah... these things are practically tanks. I have seen all three of these in their respective episodes. The bottom one went through a lot of torture. Based on the challenge, the team was not allowed to use any replacement parts, and only basic hand tooling to make repairs. They drove it onto the stage floor just like that. Even most american trucks wouldnt survive half of what they put that thing through, including the epic building drop. The second was put up against a Land Rover, and I believe a land cruiser from the seventies. I dont remember who came out on top. The topmost revision was very impressive, though purpose built with the intent of reaching the north pole. The fact it made it was astonishing in itself. I have a lot of respect for the Hilux. Good luck with yours, and keep it washed so it doesn't rot away. It looks as if it has had its own adventures with the mismatched bed.
