DavieGravy
I have a 91 Legacy that's losing about a quart of oil every two weeks and a substantial amount of coolant every so often. However, there are no visible leaks and no stains on the driveway. My suspicion is head gaskets and possibly the oil pump. Just wondering if it could be something more obvious. Thanks in advance. idosubaru
yes, it sounds like head gaskets but it could be something else. how many miles and what's the history? at some point in the past something happened to this engine...might have been a previous owner. probably ran hot due to a bad radiator (based on age) or other failed coolant system component. if it helps, i can tell you it's not the oil pump! if you plan on repairing it, replace your PCV valve as that could be a simple fix to your oil consumption issues. but won't affect the coolant. DavieGravy
I'm not sure about the history but the car is rough and has 225k. At one point the timing belt skipped a few teeth but has since been replaced. I'll look into the PCV valve and head gasket. Thanks for the response. idosubaru
do the thermostat, water pump, radiator, or any hoses look new? there's a good chance it was overheated in the past which would probably lead to a head gasket issue now. good luck with it. EJ engines are very easy to find in some areas of the country, if you're able an engine swap might be the best bet.
