my stick is really loose

Featured Replies

I just had my clutch fork, which was cracked replaced. My mechanic also welded a new exhaust flange on the y-pipe.

It runs beautifully, but now my stick makes a vibrating noise - mostly in 5th but also in 3rd. Also the stick is very very loose. Do I need to bring my car back a 3rd time - or is the noise and the looseness something that can be adjusted simply and perhaps by me or my husband?

Thanks

year, model, mileage. No one can answer a question without knowing what kind of car it is.

+ 1 on the car info.

I assume that it didn't do this before the work was done.

I am a firm believer in having the mechanic fix something that wasn't broken before. If you start adjusting or replacing parts that were touched by the mechanic during the repairs, they could blame you for the problem.

Take it back and have them look at it and do a diagnostic, that way they are responsible.

Was the stick loose b4 the repairs? The fork would not affect the stick unless they removed the trans to replace the fork. If they did then probaly forgot to reassemble something correctly.

I will absolutely bring the car back. I was just hoping that the noise/looseness sounded familiar to someone and was something simple - not indicative of a serious malfunction.

Thank You for all your help

Awesome. They did remove the trans. It was not loose before at all. In fact it was grinding in reverse and barely shifting into 1st. thats why the fork was replaced.

I was wondering if it had something to do with "welding a new exhaust flange on the Y-Pipe"

I don't even know what y-pipe is.

I have a 98 outback with a 5 speed with 155,000 some mile and have no looseness or noise. That is a simalar trans to what you have.

The y pipe is the exhaust pipes that come off your cylinder heads on either side of the engine that go down and combine to 1 pipe to the catalitic converter (butchered the word).

the looseness and noise are definitely present because of something that went on while it was at the mechanic. I whole-heartedly believe that something has not been put back proper or is missing all together.

What that part is - thats up for debate. Thats why I'm here. I dont know if it's a spring, a bushing, the welding that they did.. I really dont know.

While I have not had my trans out of mine, they do have to disconnect the shift stick to drop the trans. They certainly forgot to reassemble something correctly. Hopefully the tech did not have left over parts:banghead:

oh boy.

Well, thank you for all your help, Crash321.

I wish i didnt have to bring it back but I love my car, and I dont want to die driving it.

Nice to meet you by the way. This is my very first time posting ... anything.

Thanks again.

welcome. Much more experienced people here than me though. Welcome to the group. I have had my baby for almost 7 months now and drive it from Saginaw mi to chicago il. About 700 miles a week on average.:)

I agree, the mechanic forgot or misassembled (is that a word?) something when he/she was buttoning up. Take it back and let them drive it, they shouldn't complain.

Good Luck!

Sounds like the shifter return spring is broke / missing. Very cheap part to buy a little tricky to install with the shifter in. There used to be a thread on this before the site was hacked. My 97 5spd did the same thing drove it for months like that, annoying noise but it would hurt anything.

Welcome aboard, maggiesfriend. Sounds like shifter bushings need to be replaced--they will wear out after awhile.

Not the easiest DIY job, it's something your mechanic should have noticed and done during the repairs. You can search here on the board for more info. Here's a link to start you off:

+1 on this.

Or a shifter bearing may have been put on reverse of how it was taken off and the wear may be different (if this is possible). Not a big deal. If they need to put new bushings in the parts will not be a huge deal.

You should really check for the return spring before the bearings. It's a lot less $$ and work and the symptoms described are very much like what the missing or broken spring causes.

Replacing the fork is simple, I wonder if they reused the spring clips? Sounds like they may have. Question, with the trans out why not just do the whole clutch? The spring clips connect the fork to the bearing and you can't get to them without removing engine or trans.

Sounds like possibly the spring on the shift linkage was not reinstalled.
