Eratic Front Wipers

2002 Outback Manual 117k

On a recent snowy Pacific Northwest adventure, I noticed when I turned my wipers to full power the left blade started going farther and farther off my window. Sometimes it hits the rubber seal, sometimes it goes farther. It eventually goes so far left that I can see it in my drivers window. I've noticed several scraps and scuffs on the paint as a result of the crazy wiper. This only happens at full speed, at low speed the wiper stops a good inch from the rubber seal. Is there an adjustment I can make on the blade arms to prevent this from happening or are my motors starting to become too "loose"?

I noticed that if I pull both wipers up as if I'm going to clean the window, there is a good 2 inches of endplay that each blade arm will move.

Appreciate the help!

How about getting a socket and tightening the bolts that hold the wiper arms on for starts?

That usually indicates a broken bushing in he wiper assembly. I had the same issue, but not that crazy, really odd.

I was thinking of the little plastic sockets that conect all the linkage. I had a similar problem. Now I make it a habit to scrape ice and snow off the window all the time.
