I want to know if I can put a dual range 4wd five speed from a 1.8 into my '93 Legacy w/2.2 . Obviously I am aware I will need to change the rear diff , as well as the driveshaft , but will the transmission bolt directly up ? do I use the flywheel for the 1.8 ? And will my axles work ? I appreciate any help .

i assume you're in the US? your location isn't posted. if you're in a country that has dual range EJ's, then just get one of those.

 

look up EJ swaps here, some things will apply but you're sort of doing it different.

 

in short - no. but of course it can be done with enough modification.

 

the trans does not bolt up to the engine - you'll need an adapter plate.

 

the EJ axles will fit on a turbo trans, not a non-turbo.

 

the driveshaft will be the wrong length.

 

there are some other issues too.

IIRC, there was a guy who swapped a EA D/R into his Forester...

 

Basically it would be like an EJ swap but in reverse, you'd need to modify the trans crossmember, new driveshaft and matching rear diff, and adapter plate from SJR. As for axles, you can use FWD Impreza axles to mate to a regular 3.9 D/R box. Shifter linkage will have to be fabbed too. Its a lot of work, but it can be done, as a matter of fact SJR is about to do that swap into his Legacy off road car, so maybe talk to him, he is Scott in Bellingham on this board.

Gearbox mounts are different and you'll need to custom something to work.

Propshaft is a different length and will need to be shortened to work.

Axles use a different spline, you'll need to find the right DOJ cups or complete joint from the car the gearbox came in that will fit your axle shaft.

EA82 Flywheel re drilled to suite EJ22 engine will be needed along with the adapter plate and possibly a XT6 clutch because of the extra weight your car has and extra power. Although a EA82 clutch will fit.

Small wiring mods for reversing lights and neutral switch (the new gearbox may not have a neutral switch in which case I don't know if your ECU will be ok with that or not).

The EA82 shifter plate should probably fit in fine replacing the EJ one, although you may need to make room for the new 4WD lever.

Not sure what else there would be to do...?

Propshaft willl need to be lengthened, not shortened. The AWD legacy box is longer than than the D/R box. So when the shorter D/R box goes in the driveline needs to be longer.

Alright , let me run down what I am doing/want to do . I have a RHD Legacy wagon w/ auto . When I was in the UK ( I am back in USA) I got a pedal assembly from a legacy wagon . It is currently installed in my car with the clutch not connected to anything . The car I took the pedal assembly from had a factory d/r transmission , but I didn't look to see what size the engine was . Now , if I take a D/R from a Loyale , I will need to use the diff. from the Loyale , change the drives for the axles , and use the Loyale driveshaft ? But could I use a flywheel from a standard shift Legacy , and where would I get an adapter plate for the transmission ? I am always up for a little work ; but if this is too much of a project , I will simply hunt down an old legacy wagon and take the five speed form that ; though I'd *really* like to have the dual range . I should add that there is no turbo involved here . My opinion , turbo is the quickest way to wreck a perfectly good and reliable engine , though I know some people like them , I'll save the turbo stuff for my SAABs .

Oh yeah.. Sorry about that.

It's cool, I am really just going on logic. The AWD extension piece is longer than the partime boxes here on the GLs. Otherwise the main case sections are the same length. Can't say I've put a D/R box from a GL in a Legacy.

 

Actually, my buddy suggested to me that the it might work out to use the legacy rear section of prop shaft and use GL front section?

 

We will be doing it soon to his car:grin:

I believe SJR (Scott in Bellingham) is getting ready to do this to his Legacy. Maybe ask him some questions. I know it's been done before
