Sonicfrog
Hey All: Sorry I haven't posted much on the "New Gen" side of the forum - hey, what can I say, I haven't had to do anything to Red, the $300 94 Alpine Wagon.... until now. We have lost fourth gear in the manual tranny. I now have a bit of spare $$$$ and want to get a tranny. Am I limited to the 90 - 94 series, or will something newer fit? ...and does anyone in the Central Calif area have a tranny they would like to sell? Legacy777
Something newer will work. The main things you will need to address if going with a newer trans is that you will need to swap over the speedo cable output. The newer one has the speed sensor on the trans vs. in the combination meter. The other item is the shift linkage & u joint on the transmission shift rod. You can switch the newer u joint setup back to the older setup. Or you can upgrade. The cheapest way is to pickup a used WRX shifter assembly, and use the newer u-joint & bolt/nut. The newer transmissions are also a 6-bolt setup vs. a 4-bolt & two dowel pin setup. But that shouldn't be a big issue. The other thing is that on the WRX transmissions the starter bolt setup is different. There is not a stud on the WRX transmissions. I do not know if this also holds true to the mid-90's transmissions, since that is probably what you will need to use. Unless you want to swap your clutch pedal assembly over, you will need a transmission from a non-turbo subaru with the push clutch setup. If you get one that has a hydraulic clutch, you will may need to tap the other boss so you can change the pivot point for the cable clutch arm. You can see what I'm talking about in this picture http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/images/swap/02/DCP_3077.JPG
idosubaru
make sure you get one that's a cable clutch and not hydraulic. don't get a 1998 or up trans, that's the year the bellhousing changed.

Very interested. When would you be available for pick-up? I own my own pool service / spa repair company, and when I'm not doing that, I substitute teach (no school today). In short, I'm my own boss - I can take time off at any time. You can contact me at 559-355-5457. Mike.
