Update on my 97 t-belt replacement:

Ok. I got it all back together, and when I started it, the timing seems good,

but the crank pulley is throwing the ac belt off the back, and it's gradually noticably wobbling. Do you think it's just loose, or could I have put it back on incorrectly? We tightened it really well...

Any help, anyone?

Did you inspect the keyway in the pulley, and hte key itself on the crank to make sure there was no damage?

 

also, are you sure you seated the pulley correctly over the key?

 

If both of those are go, then you likely have a pulley that is seperating into 2 pieces (outer collar slipping off the rubber)

No, I didn't really inspect it, other than to notice that there was a key in the crankshaft. I thought I put it on correctly.

I think I'm gonna take it to a shop next door and see what they think...

If the crank key is screwed up then I guess the things probably pretty much toast, huh?

try and look at the bolt head or the inside of the pulley, not the outside of the pulley. if the bolt head has the wobble then the keyway or pulley maybe / probably is bad. if the wobble is only on the outer edge then you probably need a new 'harmonic ballancer'' (pulley).

 

how did you hold the crank when tightening the the bolt? how tight did you get it? did you use a torque wrench?

Naaah, we just used a piece of iron and I drilled holes in it to put two short allens into the holes on the pulley.

But I think I may have found the problem.

When I took off the pulley there was an indentation where the key pushed into the back of said pulley--not where it was supposed to be, in the keyway.

I just hope I didn't screw up the key.

Oh, and one more thing. It seems that only about half the key protrudes out from the crank sprocket. Is this right?

Yes the other half holds the crank timing belt gear in place

Oh that's good. Then the only thing I need to do is get the darned thing on....

I looked at the keyway in the pulley, and it looks like it's been through this before.

I'd replace it soon then. It will likely work it's way loose again. Tighten it good for now and keep an eye on it. Plan on replacing it soon though

 

If it tears up the keyway in the crank, the motor is basically toast without alot of work.

 

Pulleys are cheap, Get one for any EJ motor you want, they will all work.

 

I found one on Ebay brand new for $75
