So I saw this black wagon today, looking forlorn with the hood cracked open. I stopped since I can't help it and it's a automatic fulltime turbo 4wd. I figured bummer it's an automatic, but only 125,000 so hmmm. Is anybody familiar with this tranny so I know what I'm getting into? I didn't know there were any awd gl10's. Seems pretty special to me. She looks all sad with that "under the tree too long look". I know she wants me.

It could just be the governor, or it could be totally fubared.

Dont know of to many 4EAT's that had bad gov's in them, so its not promising.

4EATs don't have a governor, and I am not sure he said anything was wrong with it, he just didn't know some GLs and GL-10s got hte 4EAT.

 

It is a fine trans, but speced at 3.7 whchi delivers slow acceleration, and alot of hunting between 3 and 4th at highway speeds uphill.

 

I replaced the 4EAT in my GL turbo with a Legacy 4EAT, so now the car is 3.9

 

These early ones also have a weaker transfer clutch set-up, and a more primitive TCU.

 

If for some reason you get this car, I'd look into upgradeing to a later Legacy or Impreza trans (outback sport 4.44 )

Wow, thanks you guys for the awesome imfo. I figured the tranny has 50 g's left but who knows. It's good to know there's a swap. Is that a direct swap or a big harness rats nest thing? I'm kinda smart only within reason. Nice one to flip maybe. Grandma owned, the car in it's pure state. I'll be watching it.

Sorry, its been a while since I've messed with one.

Its all controlled by the TCU.

If you do the swap, you will need the TCU/harness from the swapped tranny (if you upgrade). If its a 3.9 tranny, you will also need to swap out the rear diff to match. Theres quite a few 3.9's out there, so that not a problem finding one.

A quick, but not exact way to find out if the transfer clutch is any good is to look at the tires. If they are mismatched in size at all, expect problems with it.

If you can get under the hood and inspect it better, I would look for signs of overheating.

Oil in the water, etc.

It is, after all, a EA82T.

Nah.....you don't need to swap harness or ECU. My original GL TCU operates the Legacy trasn fine.

 

The big deal in the swap is removing the bell section frot the GL trans (EA bell) and swapping it onto the Legacy (EJ bell) trans.

 

The other big hurdle is either splicing a Legacy plug into the GL car's wiring harness, or vice versa splicing the GL trans connector onto the Legacy Harness.

 

I spliced the GL connector onto the Legacy trans. But if I had it to do again, I would splice the new style, square, legacy connector onto the cars original harness, to make future legacy trannies *plug n' play*

 

The wiring is all the same as far as # of sensors, solenoids, and wires, just different colors and connectors.

OK, more awesome imfo. So does that mean that any ol' gl/loyale with a dead automatic (a dead car only good for parts IMHO) is maybe worth putting in a auto awd leggy tranny thus creating a awd gl?(or fwd just to make it go?)

only on turbo or xt cars originally equiped with a 4EAT.

 

Rewiring a car that came with a 3spd, part time 4wd automatic would be way more complicated, as they didn't have a TCU to begin with.
