If my front cv axle explodes will my awd impreza still move?

Recommended Posts

big clunk then my car wouldn't move anymore. will shift into all the gear right and engline sounds good with clutch in.

When clutch depressed loud clunks coming from feet area and no drive motion. I feel this might be something major as the rear should still drive me, but i'm not an expert in subi's yet

95 impreza EJ18 5MT AWD

Think this is one cv axle grenading?

Yeah, I would bet you have a CV blown.

The rear won't drive the car unless you were to rev it way up, causeing the Viscous centrer diff to heat and *lock* and transfer drive rearward. Even then, the VLSD is only capable of sending so much power through, so you might not even be able to get it moving much at all. Espescially if your VLSD center is worn.

yea checked the Doj joint and it is toasted.

I have had 2 aftermarked and 1 junkyard axle no either click and grind when installed or explode in less than 1/4 mile.

starting to think there could be worn motor/tranny mounts but upon inspection look good. Maybe i have really bad axle luck.

try and find a good used Subaru axle, that's your best bet. the one you gotten may have been abused, not Subaru, or something like that. give it another whirl, i've used tons of junkyard axles with no problems.

automatic transmissions will move...erratically, but they'll move. manuals will do just what you experienced and GL said, not move unless you fire it up enough to heat the VLSD fluid up. and not a good idea to do that unecessarily.

good luck.

  • 3 weeks later...

When the front outer cv joint on my 97 Imp went out the car still drove and I didn't have to rev it like crazy or anything to get it to move. I think something else is wrong. Clutch maybe?
