i've got a 95 legacy sedan 5spd.

 

when its in neutral theres a faint rubbing noise in the tranny area, push in the clutch, silence.

 

when going through the gears it makes a higher pitched sound, has me pretty worried.

 

any ideas on the cause?

Shaft bearings. They can wear quite abit before failing.

 

But at some point splitting the case and replaceing a few bearings will be in order.
