They are, some of that info isn't right, mainly all pre '80 cars are gen 1 and brats up to including 81

You're right Bob. That above post is wrong.

Early 80s stuff is referred to as 2nd gen by most everyone I've ever known. As in 1980-1984, and of course there are ALOT of runovers, but, in general that roundier cooler body style.

The later 80s (like 85 & later) stuff is 3rd gen. The square body ones all the way up to the Loyales. RX's. etc. That's all 3rd gen.

It is basically right, except he started counting with 1 being the 360's and microvans, instead of starting with 1 as the 70's cars.

I've also heard the EJ series broken out separately -- e.g. a 1990 to 1994 legacy is 1st gen EJ series, and a 1995 to 1999 legacy is a second gen EJ...

In the US at least, we often generically call the 2nd gens EA81's, and the 3rd gens EA82's, because that's what engine came in them here.... though that apparently isn't true in other markets.

Is that better?

I just thought it would be better to separate the 360's from the standards

in the original post.

They are seperated from the standards- "gens' usually refers to GL-series cars and later, so:

74-80 (81 for Brats) 1st gen

81-84 (89 for Brat and Hatch) 2nd gen

85-93 3rd gen

90-? 4th gen

The EA82 OHC engine had it's own body style, generally referred to as the EA82 style, which continued as the Loyal for a couple years. The Legacy came out in 90 (or 91, not positive) and introduced the EJ series engines.

Generally, when swapping parts, people just say Legacy, EA82, EJ, EA81 etc. It's simpler that way.

Yeah, 1990, in the US. I think it might have been 1989 in Japan.
