May 21, 200916 yr 2000 4 cyl OBW, 120K. Battery, timing belt, accessory belts, etc. replaced one year ago. Today I noticed the ABS light come on, the odometer flash, the tach stop working (engine was still running) and radio decrease in volume. Pulled over by physical inspection revealed nothing unusual. Thoughts?
May 21, 200916 yr Check the alternator for any AC ripple while the engine is running. If there is more than .1 volt then the alternator is bad.
May 21, 200916 yr If checking for alternator ripple, it's important to make sure that the battery is in good condition, and especially that the terminals are clean and tight. Otherwise, it's possible that excessive ripple will be measured due to the battery not being able to properly ''filter'' the alternator output. If the ripple is high with a good battery and connections, then as Cougar said, the alternator is at fault.
May 21, 200916 yr Author It was the alternator. Car died half-way home, fortunately right in front of a friendly service-station with nothing else to do, and a near-by parts-store with the alternator in stock.
