XT won't hold idle

Featured Replies

So I bought my 1987 XT awhile ago and was driving it and etc... Blew a head, replaced a motor. The motor I bought is a EA82T but I don't have the turbo so I plugged the coolant and oil lines to the turbo.

Now I finally got everything set back to spec but when I try to start it it won't hold idle. I used the correct timing belt procedure. The distributor is in correctly.

I tried jumping it (the battery isn't the best) but even while jumping it it won't take. So I know I have spark.

I advanced the timing (for easier ignition) and nothing.

I floored it and finally got response. It will hold idle but not accelerate as long as the pedal is at full throttle.

I have spark, I have fuel, but I don't feel like I have enough air.

I want to know a few things:

Is it an issue that the comp. ratio for a turbo motor is less than that of a N/A and I am not using a turbo?

I've never used this kind of throttle body. I know there are two idle adjustments: the idle set screw and the fast idle set screw.

When I tighten the screw am I raising idle or lowering it? (for either)

What is my issue? I can't seem to figure it out. I've tried everything.

Once drove an XT turbo that someone had removed the turbo. Very very little power. You aren't going to like the EA82T minus its turbo.

I'm not so focused on performance. I would rather have a car that runs and later worry about performance. I need a foundation on which to build first.

Oh, and I figured out the idle set screw thing just now so I don't need an answer for that.

It sounds like your timing is off, there is a leak between the MAF and the throttle body, or a large vacuum leak.

Initial timing on these cars is 20º with the green underdash connectors connected. From what I have seen, without those connected it sits somewhere around 30ºBTDC at idle.

Did you use the MPFI spider intake and injectors, or the turbo ones, and did you make sure everything was together properly for the computer you are using?

I don't think the lack of a turbo is going to effect anything at low rpms, since the turbo doesn't contribute anything until about 2000rpm.

they aren't under the dash on the XT

they are in the trunk.

what year is the computer and all

on the 85-86-early 87

you have to manually disable the vacuum advance.

Everything about the car is original '87 except the engine itself.

I used the Turbo block and intake but re-used all the other original N/A stuff.

N/A injectors,

harness,

ECU,

fuel rail,

vacuum rail,

distributor,

etc.

The only thing that should be different to spec is the compression of the cylinders. (to my knowledge)

I'll re-check on the vacuum lines today.
