EA82 body mount repair?

Featured Replies

I have a body mount that appears to be starting to crack under the lift block in my EA82. I know i've seen it happen a few times and it also seems to be fairly common, but I was wondering what you guys were doing to fix them? I always had an EA81 and never had a problem, now I have a lifted EA82 for a daily driver and the forward block of the strut support bar mount is cracking and popping while driving. It's not broken all the way through yet. Is there access to weld it back on from the inside? A way to through bolt it?

Thanks.

"forward block of the strut mount"?? I'm not following.... perhaps if you post a picture.

I know the EA82's use a three-bolt strut top - are you saying the strut tower itself is starting to crack at the forward hole? Do you have seperate blocks for each strut bolt? If so the fix is to make new strut lift blocks that incorporate the three mounts into a single 1/4" thick plate..... and of course weld up the damage thus far before installing it. You need to spread the load out as currently the stress fracture is probably because the weight is on that one more than the other two.

the forward strut support bar body mount. drivers side under the the drivers floor. there is 3 single lift blocks that hold the bushing mount for the strut support or strut control arm. it's the forward most block.

Ah now i see - you are refering to the leading rod mount. I'll have a look at what can be done tonight when i have access to an EA82 body.

is this what you were talking about ? i fixed this due to rust issues, (the radious rod is removed)

On my wagon I used a hole saw to go through the floor on the inside so I could put a nut and washer on the backside, then welded them into place. Those 3 blocks need to be solidly linked or you will have more problems. On mine the transmission tunnel started to tear as the floor pushed up on the drivers side from the stress of the strut rod. We had to plate the inside and outside of the firewall/floorpan and sledgehammer it back to where it was. I weld a tab to the strut rod plate to link the plate to the top of the lower block, and link the two other blocks to each other. Seems to help.

The other spot you will have trouble with is where the rear crossmember blocks attach. They will start to tear out of the body if you don't reinforce the link to the 2 bolts in the floorpan. I had to weld a nut to a heavy washer, then hold it up in place on the hole in the body where the body tore out and weld the washer to the body, recreating the captured nut that had escaped.

A mig welder is your friend for this.
