2.2L rocker assembly compatibility

Featured Replies

I've got some noisy lifters which I would like to tackle. Since this is my daily driver, I want to minimize down time so at the suggestion of a board member I was going to pickup a rocker assembly at a JY to get some HLA's from and I would like to know which years of 2.2 I can use.

Thanks!

No hands-on experience here but you need roller rockers, used only in 1995 and 1996. That is, if you actually need complete assemblies.

My assumption is that I just need the HLA's. Perhaps I'll just pull those. I was going to get the whole rocker assembly since they can be had cheap.

Thanks

You could always try pulling the rocker shaft assembly and bleeding the HLA's...Personally that's what I would try to do first because I'm a tight wad..lol...Have you tried like the marvels mystery oil or the sea foam treatment at all?...I had that annoying little tick on my 96 Legacy L EJ22 with 202,000 miles and I tried the Sea foam deal a little while back and Ive barely heard anything in the past few thousand miles...

I did try seafoam without any improvement. Since this is my daily driver and my backup car is currently off the road I want to minimize down time. So I want to have some HLA's handy if I end up not being able to prime one or more. I figure they are cheap enough from a JY that I'm willing to do that.

So how 'bout it? Which years can I look for?

I think they went to mechanical lash adjusters in 97... My bet for sure 95 and 96 2.2's should work...I dont feel confident in saying other EJ22's will work however they might....I have a feeling GrossGary might be the one to ask on this question.....

All of the lifters used in EJ22 engines from '90-on are identical, even in turbo engines. No compatibility problems.

One note: if you decided to go with roller rockers, you would also need to switch to roller cams: different profile.
