greg donovan
both cars are AWD and OBDII. the 4EAT in my 95 Legacy wagon has 276,000 miles on it and it is VERY tired. have a line on a 4EAT from a 98 Impreza L sedan. will the impreza trans. work in my legacy? thanks. idosubaru
it will work but you're likely to have final drive issues. the legacy is probably a 4.44 (although you don't specific which models - OBW and GT's will have 4.44). the Impreza will be a 4.11. All you need to do though is make sure whatever trans you use, you get a matching rear diff.
johnceggleston
there are a couple of exceptions, but if both engines are/were 2.2L the final drives are probably the same.
greg donovan
both cars are ej22 powered. what about the starter? does that matter? dont the imprezas have diffterent starters than the legacy?
idosubaru
Your title says 98 and 98, your post says 98 into a 95. That's a big difference as the model year makes a big difference in this case - one will work (98 into 95), one may not (98 into 98). You should clarify to be sure. Counter intuitive in this case, the same year swap is the one that could be most problematic. starter shouldn't matter, but that's easy enough to just slap an impreza starter on it if you have to. I've never had to "match the starter" so to speak on the trans swaps i've done, so i wouldn't think you'll have a problem.
